THE ADVENTURE GAMES MAGAZINE

EXCLUSIVE: MONKEY ISLAND

If you're a fan of adventure games, you have surely heard about the Monkey Island series - The games follow the misadventures of the hapless Guybrush Threepwood as he struggles to become the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean, defeat the plans of the evil undead pirate LeChuck and win the heart of governess Elaine Marley. Each game's plot usually involves the mysterious Monkey Island and its impenetrable secrets. - And, yes, I copied that from the Monkey Island series article - Yeah, like YOU never copy anything from Wikipedia, right? You don't? Oh... whatever.

The series started back in 1990, with legendary (very necesarry) The Secret of Monkey Island, and spawned a number of sequels: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1992), The Curse of Monkey Island (1997) and Escape from Monkey Island (1999)... well, then the line pretty much stoped. 2000/2001 - no new Monkey Island; 2002/2003 - no new Monkey Island; 2004/2005 - no new Monkey Island; 2005/2006 - no new Monkey Island; 2007/2008 - no new Monkey Island; 2009/2010 - no new Monkey Island; 2011/2012 - no new Monke...wait, wait! No new Monkey Island in 2009!? I don't think so! - Not only was there a completly new episodic Telltale title, Tales of Monkey Island,
That's the second biggest monkey statue I've ever seen.
there were also 2 top-notch remakes (a.k.a Special Editions) of the first two Monkey Islands (released together as Monkey Island: Special Edition Collection in 2010).

The games take place in the Caribbean, at the time of the Golden Age of Piracy. Guybrush Threepwood (a.k.a Thriftweed, Creepwood, Sheepgood, Threepwillow, Peepwood, Gorbush, Threekwood, Graybrash and Fancy Pants), the protagonist, is a wannabe pirate who desperatly tries to win the heart of the Elaine Marley (I mean, who wouldn't want to be with her!? She has some really big...boots). But, there is one man/ghost/zombie who considers himself a rival for Elaine's effections - the ghost/zombie pirate LeChuck, who is known for heavy use of voodoo magic, wants to have ultimate control of the seas, and wants to "DO" things to Elaine - well, if you're dude, and you're strait, you would too - so don't judge LeChuck! Throughout the series you meet many lovable characters, including Stan the man S. Stanman, Herman Toothrot, Voodoo Lady, Bob the Ghost Pirate, Captain Dread, Carla, The Monkey Island Cannibals, Meathook etc.

Like many other LucasArts classics (Sam & Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle etc.), Monkey Island uses a user-friendly-a.k.a-you-can't-die-so-the-only-reason-to-save-the-game-often-would-be-if-you-had-a-really-sucky-computer (or simply "user-friendly") interface, and is humour-orientaded. It's the kind of game that can make you laugh your guts out....oh...you shouldn't play these games if you want to keep your guts - but I'm telling you - this game is way better than your guts! Ya' shoul'd play' Monke' Island drinkin a botl' o' Grog, heavy drinkin' ya sea urchin'! (excuse my awful pirate accent...) Well, there's one thing left to say: "ONE OF THE BEST GAME SERIES OF ALL-TIME".
