The railroad of the Winchester & Western Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in Virginia and West Virginia. The main line extends southwesterly from a point near Winchester, Va., to Wardensville, W. Va., a distance of 39.208 miles. The carrier also owns 2.423 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 41.631 miles of all tracks owned and used, as classified by States in appendix 1. The carrier uses under trackage rights about 1.50 miles of road and station facilities at Winchester, Va., owned by the Winchester and Strasburg Railroad Company, a lessor of The Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company. In addition to the foregoing, the carrier leases certain miscellaneous facilities and equipment as described in appendix 2, under the caption Leased Railway Property.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated January 12, 1917, under general laws of Virginia, for tlie purpose of acquiring property, rights, and franchises of Winchester and Western Railroad Company (of Virginia) incorporated August 31, 1916, under general laws of Virginia, and Winchester and Western Railroad Company (of West Virginia) incorporated July 16, 1916, under general laws of West Virginia. The date of organization was January 23, 1917.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The railroad was acquired by construction. Neither of the two predecessor corporations constructed any property although that portion of road between Winchester and Strasburg Railroad Junction, south of Winchester, and Goro, Va., was surveyed by or for Winchester and Western Railroad Company (of Virginia). Construction performed by Inter-Mountain Construction Company was begun in September 1916 and completed March 15, 1921. The property was opened for operation by the latter on March 19, 1921, and was officially accepted by carrier on January 5, 1924.
