The railroad of the Wharton and Northern Railroad Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in northern New Jersey. The main line extends southwesterly from Green Pond Junction to Wharton, 15.677 miles, with branch lines from Oreland Junction to Oreland and from Wharton Junction to Lake Junction. The company owns 20.576 miles of main track and 5.606 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 26.182 miles of all tracks owned and used. In addition, the carrier has trackage rights over about 1 mile of road of the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey between Hopatcong Junction and Lake Junction, N. J. The carrier is an industrial railroad. It is controlled by the Wharton Steel Company, which is one of the principal industries served.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The road owned by the carrier, 20.576 miles, was acquired by consolidation and by construction. The date with respect to the road constructed by the carrier and its predecessor companies, the years in which the various portions of the line were constructed, and the manner in which the carrier acquired the property, are indicated in the following table, wherein, to facilitate comparison with the table showing corporate succession, previously given, the same order of corporations is maintained.
