The records reviewed did not indicate that The Alexandria & Washington Railway Company was controlled by any individual or corporation on March 31, 1890, the date of its demise, or whether it controlled any common-carrier corporation.

The property of the company was operated by its own organization from November 6, 1887, to the date of its demise.

The owned mileage amounted to approximately 4.96 miles of single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, extending from the Virginia-District of Columbia boundary line to Alexandria, Va. The entire 4.96 miles of railroad was acquired from F. L. Smith, who had purchased it at a court sale on July 9, 1887, from The Alexandria & Washington Railroad Company.

The accounting records of The Alexandria & Washington Railroad Company were not obtained. No information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. However, certain data were obtained from the accounts of The Alexandria & Washington Railway Company and the report of the Washington Southern to this commission on its corporate history.

The owned mileage amounted to approximately 4.96 miles of single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, extending from the Virginia-District of Columbia boundary line to Alexandria, Va., which had been acquired by construction.

The conditions under which the property was operated prior to 1872 were not ascertained. From 1872 to January 31, 1882, it was operated by The Alexandria & Fredericksburg Railway Company for account of the owner. On February 1, 1882, the property was placed in the hands of a receiver. On July 9, 1887, the receivership was terminated by foreclosure sale of the property, but the receiver continued operations for account of The Alexandria & Washington Railway Company until November 5, 1887, when the latter began to operate the property, although it did not acquire title until January 12, 1888.
