The railroad of Virginia Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge railroad, located in the southwestern part of Virginia. The owned mileage extends northeasterly from Fairwood to Sugar Grove, Va., a distance of 10.763 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 0.745 mile in length. Its road thus embraces 11.508 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated March 10, 1902, under the general laws of Virginia. It is controlled by the United States Spruce Lumber Company, successor to the Grayson Lumber Company, which owns approximately 96 per cent of its capital stock. The road was constructed by the Grayson Lumber Company, being opened for operation about July 1, 1904.
