The railroad of The Richmond and Mecklenburg Railroad Company, herein called the Richmond and Mecklenburg, is a single-track road located wholly within the State of Virginia, and extends from a connection with the Atlantic and Danville at Clarksville to a connection with the Southern at Keysville, 31.197 miles. In addition to this amount of first main track, this company owns 3.693 miles of yard and side tracks, a total of 34.890 miles of all tracks.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The Richmond and Mecklenburg was incorporated by special act of Virginia, approved March 25, 1875, for the purpose of constructing, completing, equiping[sic], and operating a railroad from some point at or near Keysville, on the road of The Richmond and Danville Rail Road Company, via Chase City to the town of Clarksville, Va. The charter was amended by acts approved April 2, 1879, and January 24, 1880, which empowered the company to acquire all the rights, franchises, and property of The Roanoke Valley Railroad Company. The date of organization of the Richmond and Mecklenburg was not disclosed by the records reviewed.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The Richmond and Mecklenburg acquired the entire 31.197 miles of road owned by construction, largely along the right of way and roadbed originally acquired and owned by The Roanoke Valley Railroad Company, which the Richmond and Mecklenburg purchased from the trustees of the county of Mecklenburg. The road was partially completed by the Richmond and Mecklenburg and put in operation in 1881, but was not completed in its entirety until some time in 1884.
