The railroad operated by the Muskegon Railway and Navigation Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam belt line, located in the environs of the city of Muskegon, Mich., aggregating 5.176 miles of main track and 12.579 miles of all tracks. The owned property consists of 4.172 miles of main track and 8.909 miles of all tracks extending from a point near Laketon Avenue to the water front of Muskegon. Of the remaining operated mileage, 1.004 miles of main track and 1.490 miles of all tracks is leased from the Pere Marquette Railway Company; 0.170 mile of yard tracks and sidings is leased from the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway Company; and 2.010 miles of yard tracks and sidings, owned jointly by the Pere Marquette Railway Company and the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway Company, one half each, is also leased. The carrier is controlled jointly by the Grand Trunk Western Railway Company and the Toledo, Saginaw and Muskegon Railway Company. The road is operated for freight service only and provides a belt line in and around the city of Muskegon for the interchange of freight between connecting railroads and industries.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated May 22, 1918, under the general laws of Michigan to build a terminal transfer or belt railway around and through Muskegon and Muskegon Heights, Mich., with water-front terminal and trans-lake connections to Milwaukee, Wis. The date of its organization was not ascertained.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The road, owned by the carrier, consisting of 4.172 miles, was acquired by construction during the period 1918 to August 1, 1923. Part of the development and preliminary work was performed by the Muskegon Utilities Company, which was organized for that purpose.
