The railroad of the Mount Hope Mineral Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in northern New Jersey. The main line extends northerly from Wharton to Mount Hope, a distance of 3.639 miles. The carrier also owns 1.873 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 5.512 miles of all tracks owned and used. The carrier is an industrial railroad. Practically all of its traffic represents mine products. The principal industries served are the Empire Steel and Iron Company and the Thomas Iron Company, which also jointly control the carrier.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated March 16, 1866, by a special act of the Legislature of New Jersey, for the purpose of acquiring and operating a railroad, with branches, to extend from the Mount Hope mines. The date of its organization was July 26, 1866.
- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The road owned by the carrier extending from Mount Hope to the Borough of Wharton, N. J., amounting to 3.639 miles, was acquired by construction during the years 1866 and 1867. In addition, the carrier constructed its Port Oram branch, of undetermined length, during the year 1869. This branch was sold to the Longwood Valley Railroad Company on November 12, 1875.
