[edit]The railroad of the Metropolitan Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Metropolitan Southern, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Maryland and extends from Georgetown Junction to a connection with the railroad of the Washington and Western Maryland at the Maryland-District of Columbia line, a distance of 6.680 miles. This property forms a part of the Georgetown branch projecting from Washington, D. C., to Georgetown Junction, Md.
Introductory
[edit]The Metropolitan Southern is a corporation of Maryland, having its principal office at Baltimore, Md. Information obtained from the accounting records of the company has been supplemented with data compiled from the accounting records of the Baltimore and Ohio. The company is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of capital stock. The records reviewed did not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation.
The property was operated by the Baltimore and Ohio from date of completion to December 31, 1917. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.
Corporate History
[edit]The Metropolitan Southern was incorporated May 16, 1890, under the general laws of Maryland, for the purpose of building a railroad from a connection with the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio, at Georgetown Junction, to Chevy Chase, Md., about 2.06 miles. It was organized July 8, 1890.
Development of Fixed Physical Property
[edit]The owned road of the Metropolitan Southern, 6.680 miles, was all acquired by construction. The original road from Georgetown Junction to Chevy Chase, about 2.06 miles, was built in 1890-1892 and opened for operation in the latter year. In 1909-1910 the road was extended about 4.72 miles from Chevy Chase to a connection with the Washington & Western Maryland at the Maryland-District of Columbia Line. The reclassification of about one tenth mile of road as sidetrack reduced the road mileage to about 6.68 miles.
