The Joplin Union Depot Company, hereinafter called the carrier, owns and operates a steam-railway terminal plant in the city of Joplin, Mo., which occupies about 34 acres of land, and consists of a passenger depot, freight depot, 0.74 mile of main track, 5.657 miles of other tracks, and sundry appurtenant facilities. The Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad Company, The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company, The Kansas City Southern Railway Company, and the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Company, jointly and severally, use the carrier's property under an agreement running for 100 years from May 2, 1910, paying as rental therefor the fixed charges
Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated under the general laws of Missouri on June 23, 1908, for a term of 50 years. Its capital stock was originally fixed at $500,000, but was increased to $750,000 by charter amendment filed February 28, 1910. The corporation was organized at the instance of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad Company and The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company. The Kansas City Southern Railway Company and the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Company were subsequently admitted to participation in the enterprise on an equal basis. These four companies, hereinafter referred to collectively as the user companies, purchased all of the capital stock and guaranteed the payment of the interest and principal of the mortgage bonds, thereby extending to the carrier the advantages of their credit.
The acquisition of station grounds was commenced by the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad Company and The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company during the fall of 1906, and purchases continued until May, 1910. The grading contract was let on August 8, 1910, and the work was apparently finished about May, 1911. Tracklaying commenced in May, 1911, and was finished during June, 1911. Construction of the passenger depot and mechanical-department facilities was commenced during the fall of 1910, erection was completed in the spring, and the interior finishing and equipment were completed during June, 1911. The property was placed in regular service on July 1, 1911.
