James River Valley and North Western Railway Company

The railroad of the James River Valley and North Western Railway Company, herein called the James River Valley and North Western, is a single-track line located entirely within the State of South Dakota extending from Blunt to Gettysburg, 39.902 miles.

Introductory

The James River Valley and North Western is a corporation of the State of South Dakota, having its principal office at Huron, S. Dak., and its general administrative office at Chicago, Ill. It is controlled by the North Western, through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation. The property has always been operated by the North Western.

Corporate History

The James River Valley and North Western was incorporated July 3, 1909, under the general laws of the State of South Dakota, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from Gettysburg to Blunt, S. Dak., with a branch extending from Onida to Hitchcock, S. Dak. The date of organization was July 7, 1909.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned mileage of the James River Valley and North Western, extending from Gettysburg to Blunt, S. Dak., 39.902 miles, was constructed by the North Western for the James River Valley and North Western from August, 1909, to August 31, 1910. In addition, the James River Valley and North Western owns a partly constructed road between Onida and Hitchcock, S. Dak., the completion of which has been suspended. The records reviewed indicate that part of the work of construction of the completed portion of the road was performed by Roberts Brothers, contractors, who do not appear to have been affiliated with the railroad company, and that the remainder was performed by the forces of the North Western.

Leased Railway Property

The completed railroad property of the James River Valley and North Western is leased to the North Western for a term of 25 years from September 1, 1914. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ending on date of valuation are given in the chapter on leased railway property of the report an the North Western. Under the terms of the agreement of April 1, 1898, with The Western Union Telegraph Company, the North Western, and the James River Valley and North Western have joint use of the telegraph property of that company.
