The railroad of The Franklin and Pittsylvania Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad between Rocky Mount and Gretna, Va. Of this line the carrier owns 29.955 miles of main track and 1.576 miles of yard tracks and sidings, making 31.531 miles of all tracks owned. The carrier operates under lease from the Southern Railway Company, 6.899 miles of main track and 3.373 miles of yard tracks and sidings, between Pittsville and Rocky Point, Va. The total of all tracks operated by the carrier is 41.803 miles.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated by special act of Virginia, March 12, 1878, and has its principal office at Rocky Mount, Va. It is controlled by Franklin County, Va., through 99 per cent stock ownership. From April 15, 1880, to May 1, 1914, its property was operated by the Southern Railway Company or predecessors thereof. Since May 1, 1914, the carrier has operated the property. The carrier constructed in 1879-80 the 29.955 miles of railroad which it owns between Pittsville and Rocky Mount, Va.
