The railroad of Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad Company, hereafter called the carrier, is a standard-gauge steam railroad, located in Maryland and West Virginia. The owned mileage consists of a main line extending from Cumberland, Md., via Kreigbaum, Md., to Piedmont, W. Va., with various branch lines. The most important branches extend from Eckhart Junction, Md., to Hoffman, and Eckhart, Md., and from Kreigbaum to State Line, Bedford County, Pa.
All of the common-carrier property owned by the carrier is used by it, except 0.303 mile of tracks at Kreigbaum, which are leased to The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company for exclusive operation. The carrier in turn leases 0.454 mile of road at Kreigbaum from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company and exclusively operates the same. The railroad is single track with the exception of a three-track line between Viaduct Junction, in Cumberland, and Mount Savage Junction, Md. The carrier wholly owns and uses 86.795 miles of tracks, owns but does not use 0.303 mile of tracks, and uses but does not own 0.454 mile of tracks, which are classified in the trackage table in Appendix 1.
- CORPORATE HISTORY
The carrier was incorporated March 4, 1850, by special act of the General Assembly of the State of Maryland. The purpose for which the carrier was incorporated was not disclosed by the records reviewed. The date of organization of the carrier was June 4, 1853.
