Clarion River Railroad
The railroad of the Clarion River Railway Company, herein called the Clarion River Railway, located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania, consists of a disconnected section of road extending from Croyland to Hallton, a distance of 11.826 miles.
History
The Clarion River Railway was incorporated December 17, 1889, and transported cut lumber, chemicals, and Passengers from the towns of Hallton, to the exchange point at Croyland with the Pennsylvania Railroad. The rails were laid between 1890 and 1891. The Railway would come under ownership of the Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern. In 1947 the PS&N would go under for good. In 1948, the Hallton Chemical Plant would shut down, and the Clarion River Railroad Shut down that same year.
Route
The Clarion River Railway ran from Croyland to Hallton, PA. It started at Croyland at the junction with the Ridgeway and Clearfield Railway, later the Pennsylvania Railroad. It crossed the Pittsburg, Buffalo, and Rochester at Carmen. It crosses through Portland Mills and then it crosses the Clarion River and comes into Arroyo, which contained a large saw mill. Finally, it came into Hallton, which was the home of the Clawson Chemical Plant. There was also the Hall and Gardener Saw Mill.
