Boonville, St. Louis and Southern Railway

[edit]The railroad of the Boonville, St. Louis and Southern Railway Company, hereinafter called the Boonville, St. Louis and Southern, is a single-track branch line located entirely within the State of Missouri and extending from Boonville to Versailles, a distance of 43.967 miles.
Introductory
[edit]The Boonville, St. Louis and Southern is a corporation of Missouri, having its principal office at St. Louis, Mo. It is controlled by the Missouri Pacific through ownership of capital stock. Records do not indicate that the company controls any common-carrier corporation. The property was operated successively by the Missouri Pacific Railway Company, The Missouri Pacific Railway Company (of 1880), The Missouri Pacific Railway Company (of 1909), and the Missouri Pacific from January 25, 1878, the date it was acquired, to December 31, 1917. Since that date it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as a part of the operating unit of the Missouri Pacific.
Corporate History
[edit]The Boonville, St. Louis and Southern was incorporated January 11, 1878, under the general laws of Missouri, for the purpose of purchasing the railroad constructed by the Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company, extending from Boonville to Tipton, Mo.
Between September 14, 1875, and March 8, 1880, the Boonville, St. Louis and Southern purchased certain of the road of the Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company, and on August 1, 1881, the remainder of the road of that company, together with the rights and franchises, were purchased.
The Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company was incorporated under a special act of the Legislature of Missouri, approved November 21, 1857.
Development of Fixed Physical Property
[edit]The owned property, 43.967 miles of road, was constructed by the Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company. About 25 miles of the road between Boonville and Tipton, completed November 20, 1868, was purchased by this company January 25, 1878. The remainder of the road, between Tipton and Versailles, completed July 1, 1880, was purchased by this company August 1, 1880.
Leased Railway Property
[edit]The entire property is leased to the Missouri Pacific for a term of 38 years from August 1, 1917. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the seven months ended December 31, 1917, are given in the report on the Missouri Pacific.

[edit]Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company

The accounting records of the Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad Company were not obtained. Data given below were obtained from deeds and other records in possession of the Missouri Pacific. The records reviewed do not indicate that the company was controlled by any individual or corporation on the dates of sale of its property. The property was operated successively by the Pacific Railroad, the Missouri Pacific Railway Company, and The Missouri Pacific Railway Company (of 1880) from the dates of its completion to the dates of sale. The company constructed a total of 43.967 miles of single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, extending from Boonville to Versailles, Mo. About 25 miles of the road extending from Boonville to Tipton was completed November 20, 1868, and was sold at foreclosure September 14, 1875, to J. H. Tracey, trustee. On January 25, 1878, the trustee conveyed 164/200 interest in the property to the Boonville, St. Louis and Southern and that company purchased the remaining 36/200 interest at intervals from February 1, 1878, to March 8, 1880. That portion of the road extending from Tipton to Versailles was completed July 1, 1880. This company defaulted in its payments to J. L. Stephens, contractor, who purchased the property in Morgan County at sheriff's sale on February 11, 1881, and in Moniteau County at sheriff's sale on March 11, 1881. On August 1, 1881, Stephens sold the road to the Boonville, St. Louis and Southern.
