The railroad of Asheville Southern Railway Company, hereinafter called the Asheville Southern, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad located in the west-central part of North Carolina. The owned mileage extends southeasterly from Craggy to the plant of the National Casket Company, a distance of 2.270 miles. The Asheville Southern also owns yard tracks and sidings totaling 0.836 mile. Its road thus embraces 3.106 miles of all tracks owned.
Corporate history.—The Asheville Southern was incorporated on December 29, 1905, under the general laws of the State of North Carolina, for a term of 999 years, for the purpose of constructing a railroad from a connection with the tracks of the Southern Railway Company in or near Asheville, N. C., down the valley of the French Broad River to a point at or near the mouth of Beaver Dam Creek, with a branch across the river to a second connection with the line of the Southern Railway Company at or near Craggy, a total distance of about 5 miles. Organization of the company was perfected on December 29, 1909. Its principal office is located at Washington, D. C. The property owned by the Asheville Southern at date of valuation was all acquired by construction. Surveys of the projected line were begun during January, 1906, but construction was not commenced until February, 1909. The entire line was completed and turned over to the carrier for operation October 1, 1909. The work of grading the line of the Asheville Southern was done by Borches and Company, contractors, of Knoxville, Tenn., and the tracklaying and surfacing
