Corporate History

[edit]

The Aroostook River Railroad Company was incorporated on February 26, and organized on May 23, 1873, under a special act of Maine, with authority to construct a railroad from Fort Fairfield to Caribou Village, in the town of Lyndon. Its principal office is at St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada. The road was built under contract and opened for operation to Caribou some time in 1876, and to Presque Isle in 1881. On January 12, 1878, the property was leased to the New Brunswick Railway Company (of Canada) for a period of 999 years, at a rental of $1 per annum. Since July 1, 1890, the property has been operated by the carrier.
