The railroad of the Arizona Southern Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge railroad, extending from Red Rock, Ariz., on the Southern Pacific Company, in a southwesterly direction to Silverbell, Ariz., where the mines of the Imperial Copper Company are located. In the main line are 21.811 miles of track. There are 1.756 miles of sidetracks, a total of 23.567 miles.


Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated January 20, 1904, under the laws of Arizona for a period of 50 years. The incorporators of the carrier were all connected with the Imperial Copper Company. Prior to March 31, 1915, control was vested in the Imperial Copper Company through ownership of all but five shares of the capital stock. On or about that date the property of the Imperial Copper Company, including the stock of the carrier, was sold, by order of the Arizona courts, to Lee Goldschmidt.

With the exception of engineering work in locating the line, distribution of material, and erection of a few small buildings, the original road from Silverbell, Pima County, to Red Rock, Pinal County, a distance of 20.3 miles, was built entirely by an independent firm of contractors, under contract with the Imperial Copper Company. Secondhand track material purchased from the Southern Pacific Company was used. Construction commenced about February 13, 1904, and the property was completed and turned over to the carrier for operation about September 1, 1904. On June 30, 1915, the carrier owned 24.57 miles of railroad, divided, main line, Silverbell to Red Rock 21.81 miles, yard tracks, sidings, and spurs 2.76 miles, total 24.57 miles. It is presumed that the main line was lengthened 1.51 miles subsequent to the construction of the original line.
