Abilene and Northern Railway

[edit]

Location and General Description of Property

[edit]

The railroad of the Abilene and Northern Railway Company, herein called the Abilene and Northern, is a single-track line, extending southerly from Stamford to Abilene, Tex., 38.063 miles.

Introductory

[edit]

The Abilene and Northern is a corporation of the State of Texas, having its principal corporate office at Abilene, Tex., and its principal business office at Fort Worth, Tex. The Abilene and Northern is controlled by the Colorado and Southern, through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock, except directors' shares. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property has been operated by the Wichita Valley Railway from about January 1, 1907, when the first section of road was placed in operation, to date of valuation. The operations were conducted without formal lease prior to February 1, 1908, and by formal lease since that date.

Corporate History

[edit]

The Abilene and Northern was incorporated February 5, 1906, under the general laws of the State of Texas, for the purpose of constructing a railroad from a point at or near the town of Hamlin, Tex., in a southeasterly direction to the town of Brady, Tex., about 100 miles, with a branch line from a point at or near Anson, Tex., in a northerly direction to the town of Stamford, Tex., about 15 miles. The date of its organization was February 8, 1906.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

[edit]

The owned mileage, 38.063 miles, was acquired by construction during the period 1906 to 1908. The construction work was performed by The Fidelity Construction Company, an affiliated company.

Leased Railway Property

[edit]

The entire property of the Abilene and Northern is leased to the Wichita Valley Railway for a period of five years from February 1, 1908. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ending on date of valuation are given in the chapter on leased railway property of the report on the Wichita Valley Railway.
