NPS document issues

[edit]

It seemed that documents for all of the NRHPs in CT were made available in the NPS Focus system (search screen here) in December 2009. But there are exceptions, perhaps worth noting, perhaps not. Collecting example for now:

Demolished but still listed

[edit]
  1. ^ "Fire guts Stamford landmark; vacant 19th century concrete building destroyed". Stamford Advocate. 1985-04-06.
  2. ^ "Arson cited in fire at Octagon House". Stamford Advocate. 1985-04-09.
And, Google maps Satellite view shows no surviving structure at the coordinates given in the article. So it appears it was burned and demolished. Fire mention with sources noted by an IP editor in its wikipedia article. --doncram (talk) 17:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kaatz Icehouse, in Trumbull, Connecticut. NRHP-listed in 1977, demolished in 1978 according to Markvs88. Markvs88, reports here are welcome with or without a lot of documentation, but do you have a source about the demolition that is easy to point to? If not, no problem, the CT state staff should be able to verify it is gone. --doncram (talk) 13:59, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a mention of the demolition in the Trumbull Historical Society web site. The HAER documentation also confirms it. Also, this site is not listed on the State Register where typically anything on the NRHP is automatically listed on the State Register. --Polaron | Talk 15:08, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The location of the icehouse was/is near two Trumbull parks (Indian Ledge Park & the rear of Old Mine Park Archeological Site), so the street is well traveled though not a major road. Note that if you look at a map the address for the VFW (1 Veterans Circle) will overlay that of the icehouse (~255 Whitney Avenue) -- it is a "vanity" address and the only address on the road next to Kaatz Pond.
I personally saw the Icehouse demolished as a child in 1978 with quite a few other people... it took a couple of days. Several sections of the walls were taken away on trucks and were used for sheds or garages on private properties as it was a massive structure. As you can see from my pictures in the Kaatz Icehouse article, the Trumbull VFW sits on the same area that the icehouse did -- none of it remains except for the pond.
There is also no town of Trumbull signage for the icehouse as there is for other Trumbull historical landmarks such as the Christ Episcopal Church and Tashua Burial Ground or Old Mine Park Archeological Site). The second citation in the article (Images of Trumbull, Trumbull Historical Society, 1997 p72 ISBN 0752409018) is a work of the Trumbull Historical Society and categorically states it being destroyed. Their website [[1]] has similar text to the book at about three quarters of the way down the page.
The Library of Congress also lists it as demolished in May 1978 with this document: [[2]]. If you click on the main page for it at [[3]], you can see a dozen photos, of which #2 & #3 show how big the place was (and that it's standing where the current VFW is).
NB: I have no relationship with the Trumbull Historical Society, the Kaatz family, the LOC, the NRHP, etc. This was the last icehouse standing in New England, and it is a shame its lost. Markvs88 (talk) 15:19, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Town location issues

[edit]
I see that the "Stratford Shoal Light" is indeed listed in NRIS, and your moving its row from the table for New Haven NRHPs to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Fairfield County, Connecticut seems appropriate given your knowledge of its location. But what description, where, are you referring to? doncram (talk) 02:27, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In the NRIS database, there is a line that says "Note: SW end of east breakwater at entrance to New Haven Harbor". This is exactly the same description given for Southwest Ledge Light, which is indeed at that exact location. Stratford Shoal Light is on the NY state line directly south of Stratford and is clearly not in New Haven Harbor. I have deleted that description from the table entry for Stratford Shoal Light. --Polaron | Talk 02:33, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Would these then be the NRIS corrections needed: For Stratford Shoal Light, NRIS reference number 89001477, NRHP-listed on May 29, 1990:
Error in town name: "New Haven"; correction to: "Stratford"
Error in county name: "New Haven"; correction: "Fairfield"
Error in location description: "SW end of east breakwater at entrance to New Haven Harbor"; correction to: "Middleground Shoal, Long Island Sound".
Please suggest revision to the location description if my wording is not correct. Thanks! doncram (talk) 02:49, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. --Polaron | Talk 02:52, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

County location issues

[edit]
The NRIS-provided coordinates for the location, used in the wikipedia article for it, place it clearly in Tolland County. doncram (talk) 00:24, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But, NRIS reports 59 contributing buildings and 0 noncontributing objects. --doncram (talk) 21:48, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NRIS has a lot of blank entries for this listing, including whether it is a historic district or not. Basically only the name, location, listing date, reference number fields are not blank. --Polaron | Talk 15:23, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates

[edit]
FYI, there are occasional NRIS-based coordinates that are quite incorrect, like by typos, which can be seen by checking the Google map for a county list and seeing some way out of the county. These can but don't really need to be reported here. They might or might not be reported further to the National Register, which knows that many coordinates are off and is using some different approaches to improve their coordinates. Actually the NRHP coords available in some Google Earth layer available somewhere will differ from many of the NRIS database ones already. Further, a high proportion of the NRIS coords will be off by 100 yards or so in Connecticut on close to an E-W line, due to 1985 coordinates system change, relative to old U.S. Geological Survey quadrant maps, used as sources, copies included in many NRHP applications. I have no specific knowledge about this district, but in general if you have correct, different coord info you should correct it (hopefully also leaving a <!---hidden comment note---> explaining it is your doing and/or a correction to the NRIS value. I usually just comment out the NRIS coords in such cases. Some more about NRHP coords is written up at wp:NRHPmos section on Coordinates. doncram (talk) 06:23, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
