Task Instructions for updating Cochrane Systematic Review References on Wikipedia

1. Find an update on the project page that interests you: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Cochrane_update/August_2017

2. Open the Wikipedia article, the old review, and the new review.

3. Find the text in the article where this Cochrane review is referenced. Verify which version of the review is cited in the Wikipedia article.

4. Check to see if the conclusion of the new review is different than the old review, and compare this to the text in the wikipedia article.

5. Update the reference in the Wiki article to reflect details of the new review (if necessary), and add the updated citation information.

6. Mark as complete. How to mark as complete:

• Go to https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Cochrane_update/August_2017
• Click on the ‘edit source’ tab on the page (upper right) .
• Search for the appropriate article using ctrl-f
• Type " Done" in front of the review update that you performed.
(you can do this by typing in the following template: {{done}})
• At the bottom of the page, click ‘Publish changes’. Your work on this article is now complete.


How to update the reference in the Wikipedia article to reflect the conclusions of the new review

1. Create a Wikipedia account

2. Open the Wikipedia article that you will be editing.

3. Click the ‘Edit’ tab at the top of the section that you wish to edit.

4. Follow these instructions to update the reference details from the old review to the new review: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:VisualEditor/User_guide#Editing_references

5. Please be sure to remove the “update needed” tag and the outdated reference, and replace it with the new reference version.

6. Once you’ve edited and clicked on ‘apply changes’, check that these changes appear in the reference list for the article. Please add in a small description of your edit. For example: "Cochrane Review Update. No changes made to text" or "Cochrane Review Update performed. Adjusted text to reflect conclusions of new review".

In terms of polishing/editing rules for medical-related Wikipedia articles, the main guideline is that every sentence or statement is supported by an unbiased reference according to the WP:MEDRS policy. Primary references are not to be used.
