This is the course page for a four-week online Wikipedia lecture series for students participating in the Cochrane UK Internship Program June 5-June 26 2018. Cochrane.

Class overview

Welcome to the 4-week live online course series. Typical classes:
1. Introduction and overview of the previous session and assignment
2. 20-30 minute powerpoint presentation
3. 20 minute hand-on demonstration or Wikipedia editing to prepare for the assignment
Every class comes with a homework assignment which should be completed before the next week. The assignments are planned to take approximately 1 hour.

  1. If you do not have one already, create a Wikipedia account
  2. While logged into your Wikipedia account, please register as a participant in this online class series on our "course dashboard".

Why are we interested in sharing evidence on Wikipedia and how does Wikipedia work?

Objectives:
1. Group introduction
2. Go through the overall project objectives
3. Medical content on Wikipedia: Impact
4. WP:MEDRS: Reliable sources for Wikipedia
5. Anatomy of a Wikipedia Article
6. Live demonstration of the assignment: Learning to edit in your sandbox and practice communicating with other editors (Wikipedia-style).

Slides and video conferencing information To be emailed before the session

Assignment (please complete before the session in week 2): 1. Find your user page and add a short paragraph introducing yourself and your interests on Wikipedia (can be anonymous)

2. Getting Started Editing Medical Content on Wikipedia: Practice in your sandbox

a. Find a Cochrane Review that interests you from the Cochrane Library
b. Search Wikipedia to see if it is already used as evidence (you can search with the PMID)
c. Find a Wikipedia article that you think this evidence is appropriate for
d. Re-word the conclusions of the Cochrane review
e. “Ping” Jenny to come and see your sandbox
f. Read Medical Editing “Cheat Sheet” and try to add your citation using the PMID citation tool
