Wikipedia:WikiProject Martial arts/Kickboxing task force/Guidelines for articles about kickboxers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An article about a notable kickboxer should have:

 1. Infobox martial artist (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Kickboxing/Template)
 2. Lead section
 3. Biography
 4. Titles, awards and recognitions
 5. Outside sports (only necessary and it cannot be covered in the biography section)
 6. Kickboxing record
 7. See also
 8. Notes (only if necessary)
 9. References (must be included in all articles)
 10. External links

Avoid adding trivia-like sections. The outside sports section is intended to provide space for other ventures in which the athlete is also notable, such as a successful acting career. Try to avoid adding random facts unless they are notable and try to integrate them in the prose. For specifics, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trivia sections).

Infobox martial artist

[edit]

All articles should begin with a Infobox martial artist. When filling the infobox, please take into account the following considerations:

 • Do not add non-notable nicknames in the other names field. In order to show that a certain nickname or a ring name is notable, add an in-line citation with a reliable source either in this field or within the text.
 • In the weight_class field, include only the division in which a kickboxer is notable. Some kickboxers may compete in several weight classes but they most likely are notable for their achievements in one class. To determine this, consider in which weight classes the person has held championships or a successful runs. If a kickboxer is notable in more than one weight class, separate each class with <br> at the end.
 • Do not add fighting styles that aren't supported by reliable sources. Remember that the threshold for inclusion is verifiability, not truth.
 • In the fields related to family, relatives and students, only add those persons that are notable.
 • Remove all extra fields that are not used. It is unnecessary to keep fields such as death_place when a person is still alive. When information becomes available to fill those fields, they can be easily added.
 • Remember to add the date in the updated field whenever you update the infobox. This allows people to know how up-to-date the information in there is. This is important for kickboxers who are active. Using Start date in the field can help you avoid formatting problems and allows other editors to easily fill this field.

Lead section

[edit]

The lead section should have a brief summary of the most important aspects of the kickboxer. Refer to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (lead section) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) for specifics.

Biography

[edit]

Generally speaking, it is better to start this section by stating when and where the person was born. After that, describe the person's life and notable events in relation to kickboxing in a chronological order from oldest to earliest. Remember that Wikipedia is not a complete exposition of all possible details but a summary of accepted knowledge regarding its subject. Avoid adding unsourced content and give the information the appropriate weight. If you have doubt on how to write this section, check an existing article like Peter Aerts, Ernesto Hoost or Semmy Schilt or post your concerns in the talk page of this WikiProject.

Depending on the length of the content and/or if the article is also overseen by other WikiProjects, you may want to add additional section to divide the content, such as Early life, Martial arts training, Amateur career, Mixed martial arts career, Kickboxing career, K-1 career, etc.

Titles, awards and recognitions

[edit]

Add in this section all notable titles, awards and recognitions that the person has earned. It is normally expected that most of them have already been referenced within the biography section, so there is no need to references here unless this information is not mentioned in said section. Try to present them in a logical order and divide them if they are for different types of accomplishments. For example, place K-1 titles in a K-1 list, karate titles in a karate list and so on. Place them from earliest to oldest.

Kickboxing record

[edit]

In this section include a record of all the recorded fights that a kickboxer has had in his/her professional career. The kickboxing record includes all fights in competitions of any of the different styles and combat sports mentioned in the project's scope (Shoot boxing, K-1, Savate, Muay Thai, etc.) If the information is available, you can include an amateur record, but do not include amateur bouts in a professional record. Instead, create a different record table for amateur matches. If you do not know if a fighter's bout is amateur or professional, include it in the professional record table until a reference shows that is not a professional fight. Exhibition fights should not be included at all even if they are notable.

Bouts already sourced within the biography section or in notable events that have their own article do not need to be referenced with inline citations, but all others do. It is particularly important that you add sources for fights not referenced elsewhere because there is not a central database that keeps record of all of them like in mixed martial arts, judo or boxing, which makes it very difficult for other editors to verify these bouts and verifiability is a core policy of Wikipedia.

Use the format presented in the example below to add bouts of any of the kickboxing variants. When necessary and possible, add a note that says under which rules the fight took place, for example, K-1 rules, IKF rules, Shoot boxing rules and so on. If an event has the name of the style, it is not needed to add such a note, for example, K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final, Shoot Boxing World Tournament 2006 and similar ones.

Notes about kickboxing record

[edit]
 • Because there is no central database that keeps record of all kickboxers, it is not expected that the kickboxing record in the heading matches the bouts recorded in the table. However, it is expected that said record is referenced in at least one reliable source.
 • Never add non-officially announced bouts. Wikipedia is not the place for rumors or speculation. Any future bout that is not referenced in the record or within the body text will be removed.
 • When adding a location, use the format city, country.
 • Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (capital letters), do not capitalize the text within parentheses outside of the first word when writing the method. For example, use "TKO (Corner stoppage)" instead of "TKO (Corner Stoppage)". Also, remember that the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. Do not use your interpretation of a method in the record, follow what the sources say. For example, if a source says that the fight was a KO by right hook but you believe it was a TKO by punches, use KO (Right hook). The winning method should be as accurate as possible so, if it's TKO by either referee stoppage, doctor stoppage or corner stoppage, it is okay to add a reason, TKO (Ref. stoppage/three knockdowns), TKO (Doc. stoppage/cuts), TKO (Corner stoppage/towel), always following what the sources describe.
 • If an event has its own article in Wikipedia, use the name of the article and do not add extra text or stylization. For example, do not use K-1 World Grand Prix 2001 Preliminary Holland, leave only K-1 Holland GP 2001 in Arnhem. Only wikify events if the events themselves have an article.
 • The notes field is to be used for information related to the match, including but not limited to special rules, championship defenses, tournament fights, failures to make weight and similar.

It is recommended that you add this section to link to other notable topics that you may feel are related to a person. These are some common examples:

References

[edit]

Always add this section as it is here that other editors will be able to verify the information. It is recommended that you use reflist.

[edit]

Keep external links minimal, meritable, and directly relevant to the article. If a kickboxer has an official page, faceboook and twitter link only to the official page. Avoid linking fansites. Please read Wikipedia:External links for further information. These are some examples of valid external links:

 • For K-1 fighters it's common to add K-1 official web site.
 • Kickboxer's official web site
 • The gym the fighter represents official web site.

Categories

[edit]

Do not forget to add the appropriate categories at the end of a biographical article. These are the common categories.

 •
 •
 •
 •
 •
