Wikipedia:WikiProject Mammals/Missing mammal genera

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coming from[1].

List of genera of mammals (1347) currently in use by the MDD (Mammal Diversity Database Version 1.10)

[edit]

Here I suggest we go by the following :

Order

Suborder
Infraorder
Parvorder
Superfamily
Family
Subfamily
Tribe
Genus
Subgenus (if I go up to there)

Remark : The data set of the reference includes only 101 extinct mammals. Therefore, the number of species by genus can differ from reality as not every extinct species are presented under each genus. Aswell, many extinct genera are not featured in the data set. This wikiproject focus specifically on the data set genuses and species with the objective of identifying what's missing on Wikipedia (species, genuses, etc). The genuses in which one or more of the 101 extinct mammal species are featured in the data set will be noted

Naemorhedus (6 species) --- > Comments : Complicated taxonomy. N. baileyi, N. caudatus and N. goral are the clear species (which the ASM mentions as the 3-species model). However, they also note the 5 species ([baileyi, caudatus, goral] + cranbrooki and evansi) and 6-species models (([baileyi, caudatus, goral] + [cranbrooki and evansi]) + griseus). These models were suggested in 2019, 2020 and 2021 by Mori et al. (2019), Li et al. (2020) and Joshi et al. (2021) respectively. Under taxonomy notes, the ASM stated that the taxonomy of this genus is unresolved. I would suggest to keep the wiki page of the genus as it is for now.

Lagenorhynchus (1 species) --- > No changes needed. Comments : With the ASM tentatively recognizing (?) the decision to move L. australis, L. cruciger, L. obliquidens and L. obscurus to Sagmatias and L. acutus to Leucopleurus. These moves are flagged and should not be effectuated on wikipedia until further validity/studies and agreement between the Society for Marine Mammalogy and other parties. Therefore, keeping the 5 species flagged aswell as the species that stayed put in Lagenorhynchus in all cases (ASM, SMM) : L. albirostris in the Lagenorhynchus page is the good thing to do until further details are known. The wiki page of the genus Lagenorhynchus also contains 1 extinct species (which do not have a page)
