The town of Quedlinburg lies on the River Bode north of the Harz Mountains. In 994 it was granted town rights; from the 10th to 12th centuries it boasted an imperial palace or Königspfalz, visited at Easter by secular rulers; and for almost 900 years it was home to a spiritual, and later, secular order of canonesses at Quedlinburg Abbey. Quedlinburg's architectonic heritage was recognised in 1994 by UNESCO when it was added to the World Heritage List, making the town the largest heritage site in Germany.
