- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups? - Those groups are about specific types of events, but the aim of the proposed project would be to improve recent events.

Oppose
[edit]- Oppose per WP:NOT#NEWS policy. We don't need more coverage of recent and ongoing events, but less. The policy problem is that recent events have little in the way of secondary source coverage (most news about them is primary sourcing – witness quotes, and off-the-cuff "analysis" that will later prove incorrect and have to be replaced, and will be misleading in the interim). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ< 21:59, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose because of the hassle of trying to determine which events are "recent" and which aren't. Also, at some point recent events will become less recent, and soon you end up with banner tags on pages of events from 4 years ago. Plus, if you are creating an article primarily because it is recent, what happens when it is no longer recent? "It's not my job anymore?" What if you are creating a draft and it stops becoming recent enough and you move on to something else? Wikinews already has this problem; if you actually don't get your news article done within three days they will actually delete it. So now you have amateur journalists rushing to get their piece done, and you really think their number one concern is accuracy? Thus the idea of a WikiProject solely for recent events is problematic because of the ephemerality of "recent". However, I want to be clear that I disagree entirely with SMcCandlish on his belief that we need less articles about news events, since Wikipedia provides context and detail that news sources (including Wikinews) regularly fail to provide. Wikipedia rewards effort and values quality over speed. But overall, my main issue with this WikiProject is its implementation. I just don't feel comfortable with a WikiProject that'd so reliant on something so temporal. — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs) 00:10, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
