Description
[edit]This WikiProject will cover small watercraft, frequently known as boats, as opposed to ships, which are covered under WP:WikiProject Ships. Ships and boats smaller than those covered under WP:SHIPS would be covered by this project. As WPSHIPS finds some watercraft too small to be under their scope, would be covered under the scope of this project. 76.66.199.238 (talk) 08:23, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]Oppose
[edit]- Unfortunately there are far too many wikiprojects that are abandoned and or inactive. Starting one for boats seems just as doomed. Other projects that will cover boats are WikiProject Sailing, Water sports, Kayaking, Rowing and Fisheries and Fishing. Brad (talk) 17:01, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Some boats aren't covered under any existing project, unless it gets tagged with WikiProject Transport, from what it seems. 76.66.196.13 (talk) 04:51, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- OPPOSE because there are no formal accepted definitions in this area. When does a boat become a ship? Is a ship a boat? Boatman (talk) 22:27, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- At Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ships#Scope? it explains that WP:SHIPS cutoff is 100ft/30m and 100t. So as WPSHIPS itself does not have a formal definition, what's the problem? 184.144.169.126 (talk) 14:43, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]It would also be nice to cover the boat aspects of amphibious vehicles, which WPSHIPS does not cover. 76.66.203.138 (talk) 09:35, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree that there needs to be something done for boats. At least one or two articles I have worked on had WP:SHIPS removed. Why can't WP:SHIP be changed to Ships and Boats? Is there a LOA cut-off that I am not aware of? Is a 28-foot (8.5 m) vessel a boat or a ship, for example? If there is an agreed upon cut-off, could that be stated on Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships? —Diiscool (talk) 13:32, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- There is an apparent cut-off at the low-end. One WPSHIPS editor related it as a length, another gave a displacement instead (quantities which I don't recall at the moment). 76.66.203.138 (talk) 14:26, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I think that all of the half-dead projects named above ought to be merged into one good one. "Ships and boats" as a title works for me. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:02, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree. Boatman (talk) 22:29, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is a suggestion for a Maritime WikiProject, to umbrella WP:SHIPS, and take care of boats as well, see WT:WikiProject Maritime Trades. 65.93.14.196 (talk) 05:46, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I’m fairly new to Wikipedia, but have been working on some articles in WikiProject Transport and also have an extensive background with boats. I think the suggestion for a WikiProject focused on boats makes sense, as WikiProject Ships already seems to be well established. However, as Brad mentioned above, there are already several WikiProjects related to this subject that are fairly inactive and creation of a WikiProject Boats would run the same risk of becoming dormant. As something of a compromise I would propose the creation of Wikiproject Boating and assigning the less active WikiProjects mentioned above (WikiProject Sailing, Water sports, Kayaking, Rowing and Fisheries and Fishing) as Wikipedia taskforces subsumed by the umbrella project Wikiproject Boating. This would achieve multiple goals of converting the less active WikiProjects to taskforces and at the same time create a more encompassing WikiProject for articles concerning water vessels not dealt with in the WikiProject Ships. An example parallel to this proposal can be seen in WikiProject Food and Drink, which has several taskforces concerned more specific issues, such as The Desserts Taskforce. Anyways, I hope these thoughts are helpful and always welcome any feedback and further suggestions. Happy editing! Henryscobie (talk) 19:44, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I should point out, there is a newly created Maritime transport task force, under WP:TRANSPORT, which looks like a natural place for boats which aren't covered by WP:SHIPS.. "Maritime transport" sounds like a pretty good all-encompassing term that could include WP:SHIPS as well, but I guess they are staying separate. Mlm42 (talk) 23:20, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Great, thanks for the tip Mlm42 - I'll definitely check that out. Henryscobie (talk) 13:04, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Fishing and Fisheries is not a boat topic, it's an agriculture/hunting topic; you can get some rubber boots and go to a stream to fish without a boat. Watersports is also not a boat topic, since swimming is a watersport. 184.144.169.126 (talk) 14:46, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- A new Maritime transport project would be great. Upgrading the task force to a full project should be brought up. 184.144.169.126 (talk) 14:46, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
