Q181

[edit]

Great to be on board. I apologise if this question has been asked and answered before but can anyone tell me who played the most VFL/AFL games and never kicked a goal? --Jonesy (talk) 21:55, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That would be Ted Potter, 182 games, no goals. Rod "Tilt" Carter played 293 games for 1 goal. --Roisterer (talk) 23:42, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the man. I think Carter played more games before he scored his first goal, but Potter played the most without scoring one at all. Over to you Roisterer. -- Jonesy (talk) 02:30, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As a matter of (probably low) interest, a friend of mine went to school where Potter worked and says that Potter had no idea he held this record until a student told him so. --TheGrantley (talk) 05:40, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q182

[edit]

According to the Coodabeen Champions, who was a hood? --Roisterer (talk) 22:44, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dermie?? --Jonesy (talk) 23:05, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Dermott Brereton is a hood, and if I recall correctly, someone from Frankston could never be any good. --Roisterer (talk) 00:40, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q183

[edit]

Sorry it took so long for this question - I had to think of one. Here goes. What have Bernie Quinlan and Marcus Ashcroft done that no other player in the history of the VFL/AFL has achieved. --Jonesy (talk) 06:50, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Play over 150 games for two "teams", although the Bears/Lions separation is more technical... it's not as if he was traded or delisted. The-Pope (talk) 14:08, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct. I agree in Ashcroft's case it is more a technicality. I was originally going to ask what made Quinlan unique until I stumbled across the information on Ashcroft. Jonesy (talk) 02:40, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q184

[edit]

Who was the first player of Asian descent to play VFL/AFL footy? The-Pope (talk) 14:15, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems too obvious, but is the answer Peter Bell from Freo/Kangaroos/Freo? Jonesy (talk) 20:52, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, it was quite a bit before the part-time property developer/part-time footballer's era. The-Pope (talk) 02:52, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wally Koochew played 4 games for Carlton in 1908. There could be some earlier players but Koochew looks like being the first player with a recognisable Asian name. --Roisterer (talk) 07:02, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wally's the one. I think he deserves not to be redlinked. this link looks like a good RS for the article. The-Pope (talk) 01:59, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q185

[edit]

Which year had the earliest start to a VFL/AFL season? --Roisterer (talk) 01:50, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The 2000 season started on New Years Eve 1999. --TheGrantley (talk) 10:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, should have made clear that I was talking about the season proper rather than preseason. --Roisterer (talk) 22:09, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Would it still have been 2000, what with the Olympics leading to an earlier start? --TheGrantley (talk) 12:01, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am at a loss to find round 1 of a season starting earlier than 2000 (8 March) - would it have been a season where a game from a later round was plucked out of that round and played earlier in the season? --Jonesy (talk) 22:09, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are on the right track. --Roisterer (talk) 01:10, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aah. I see why people were having trouble with this one. The answer I was after was 1985, where Essendon and Hawthorn played their Round 3 game early, however not as early as I thought. I was laboring under the belief that the match was played on 23 February while I now see it was 23 March. Apologies for everyone who spent time chasing a red herring. As it would now seem that User:TheGrantley was first in with the actual answer (2000), perhaps he should have next go. --Roisterer (talk) 03:47, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q186

[edit]

Sorry for the delay folks, I missed that I had the correct answer, so to speak. Of course, now I can't think of a question to save my life. So, I shall ask "who said, when asked what he and his friend spent their spare time, 'We dance 'n' prance, chase chicks and run amok'? --TheGrantley (talk) 22:22, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was Ang Christou about Anthony Koutifides (or the other way around). --Roisterer (talk) 22:07, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, been away. Yes, Ang Christou did say that about him & Kouta. --TheGrantley (talk) 11:04, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q187

[edit]

Which VFL B&F, who has a Coodabeen Champions song in his honour, also played with Port in its pre AFL days? --Roisterer (talk) 22:23, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Tom Quinn fits most of your criteria but I have no idea whether the Coodabeens ever did a song about him. --TheGrantley (talk) 01:42, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think Tommy Quinn has a Coodabeens song either but, by jove, he should have. The person I'm thinking of is a bit more recent than that. --Roisterer (talk) 22:41, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Craig Bradley? Jonesy (talk) 22:55, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, Craig Bradley wasn't the person I had in mind as I don't think the Coodabeens had a song about him. I could be wrong though. The player I'm thinking of one his B&F at Collingwood. --Roisterer (talk) 21:16, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wes Fellowes --TheGrantley (talk) 00:50, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Wes Fellowes won a B&F at Collingwood, played a season with Port Adelaide and had the song "You've been dropped again Wes Fellowes" (to the tune of "Fernando" by ABBA) sung about him by the Coodabeens. --Roisterer (talk) 22:02, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q188

[edit]

Who was recruited by the Eagles as compensation for losing Tony Godden to Fremantle? (I think the Eagles got the better part of this deal). --TheGrantley (talk) 03:53, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would that be David Wirrpanda? Jonesy (talk) 05:16, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it would be. Fremantle got 11 so so games out of Godden while the Eagles have received 190 odd games out of Wirrpanda. --TheGrantley (talk) 03:58, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q189

[edit]

My apologies, I have been away for work and didn't realise I got the previous question correct. This may have been asked before but which team (minimum of 50 games played) has the worst win-loss record at all three of the following venues: Victoria Park, Windy Hill and Princes Park? Jonesy (talk) 07:47, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could have included Brunswick Street as well! Sainters get the unwanted record. The-Pope (talk) 13:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed - over to you The-Pope. Jonesy (talk) 21:15, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q190

[edit]

Which interstate team offered Ted Whitten £2000 to coach them in the late 1950s... which he obviously rejected. The-Pope (talk) 05:16, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't heard of any case where a SANFL team did this so I will guess Subiaco Football Club. --Roisterer (talk) 08:27, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Meanwhile, I'll guess East Fremantle Football Club. --TheGrantley (talk) 22:30, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Right state, wrong teams. This team got a different interstate capt-coach a few years later and had great success. The-Pope (talk) 23:36, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What's left? Claremont? --119.11.32.140 (talk) 11:08, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Three teams down, five to go. It may have been a hatred of the colours that kept him over east, but he missed out on three flags by staying a Dog. The-Pope (talk) 08:56, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
East Perth Football Club --Roisterer (talk) 09:30, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Swan Districts who with Haydn Bunton, Jr won premierships in 61,62,63 Gnangarra 12:11, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the one. I wonder if he would have become "Mr Football" (or more precisely) "Mr Victorian Football" if he'd taken the money and coached over here... especially with no State of Origin rules which would have resulted in him playing for WA! Interestingly, in another source, there is a mention of Steve Marsh being paid £350 to switch from South to East Freo, so 2000 must have been a huge amount. I wonder what Bunts got? Over to the pine plantation. The-Pope (talk) 14:29, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q191

[edit]

Since The-Pope mentioned tall timber what occurred in 1955 for the last time? Gnangarra 21:26, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure of the connection to tall timber but Tony Ongarello used a place kick for goal for the last time. --Roisterer (talk) 00:03, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep it was that, over to you Gnangarra 00:25, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q192

[edit]

Which former VFL player was thought to have played 100 games for a club until it was discovered that a game played by his brother had been mistakenly credited to him? --Roisterer (talk) 02:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Going by your recent edits it could be Laurie Nash? --TheGrantley (talk) 00:50, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No but you're sort of on the right track. --Roisterer (talk) 09:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A clue is needed, it seems. The player in question is one of the most famous VFL players of all time. --Roisterer (talk) 11:04, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Roy Cazaly Gnangarra 11:36, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! For many years Cazaly was credited with 100 games for St Kilda until it was discovered that one of those games was actually by his brother Ernest. --Roisterer (talk) 23:13, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q193

[edit]

Which Carlton Premiership player played his last game for Carlton against Fitzroy rnd 15, 1942? Gnangarra 06:56, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don McIntyre? --Roisterer (talk) 04:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, monday after the game(his 100th) he boarded a troop train for Townsville from there off to New Guinea[1]. Gnangarra 15:42, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q194

[edit]

The father of which former VFL player played in twelve grand finals in his local competition? --Roisterer (talk) 00:17, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Michael? --TheGrantley (talk) 05:55, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
TI would have only played in 4 GFs... 75,79,80&81. If you hadn't said former VFL player I would have guessed Russell Ebert. Peter Hudson?
Not Huddo either (unless some of his grand finals are not mentioned in my source). SANFL Grand Finals are what we are after. --Roisterer (talk) 00:23, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Geof Motley played in nine premierships for Port Adelaide, so he may have also played in three losing grand finals. His son Peter Motley played for Carlton. --TheGrantley (talk) 00:44, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Geof Motely played in 12 grand finals, and his son Peter was a VFL player until that tragic car crash. --Roisterer (talk) 21:42, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q195

[edit]

Sorry folks, been away for the long weekend. According to my source, who kicked the first goal while wearing a number on their jumper? --TheGrantley (talk) 09:25, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, on the WikiProject AFL Talk page you wrote that Vin Gardiner of Carlton kicked the first goal while wearing a number on his jumper, so I guess I should believe you. --Roisterer (talk) 13:02, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the bloke. --TheGrantley (talk) 05:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q196

[edit]

Which former VFL player, more famous in another sport, played 2 VFL games, one against Richmond and one against North Melbourne, wearing the number 50 jumper? --Roisterer (talk) 01:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Stynes?

Interesting guess anonymous IP but not the person I am after. Cricket is the other sport the player is more famous in. --Roisterer (talk) 10:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jamie Siddons would be the one then. The-Pope (talk) 14:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work as usual, Pope. I wonder if Siddons would have played Test cricket if he stayed in Sydney and played cricket for NSW. --Roisterer (talk) 23:16, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other than raising the hopes of many a blue-bagger, what was significant about Matthew Kreuzer's debut - and it's numerically related to what were celebrating this week/year.The-Pope (talk) 09:08, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

150th drafted player to play for carlton. Gnangarra 10:59, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I should go off and count them now... it wasn't the answer I had... a quick scan through the AFL 2005 book has them up to about 85-90 by then (including national, pre and mid seasons and rookies, but not trades, so nope, not that. phew. It's not Carlton related. The-Pope (talk) 15:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
150th drafted player from the TAC Cup? --Roisterer (talk) 06:36, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to check that, but according to TAC Cup it's 15 years old, and I'm sure that more than 10 guys have come from it each year. I slightly misled yo all with the 150 clue... it's actually the 1500th something that happened.The-Pope (talk) 17:01, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
the obvious guess first 1500th person to play vfl/afl... Gnangarra 15:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You haven't been paying attention at Wikipedia:WikiProject AFL/Players!! We have over 2900 player pages already with about 11000 as the target. The-Pope (talk) 16:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Kreuzer is the 1500th player the media have described as "the next big thing"? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:54, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
1500th player to score a goal in the VFL/AFL?Jonesy (talk) 05:39, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Austria-Hungary decimalised the Kreuzer in 1857, exactly one year before the birth of Australian football. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 07:03, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm surprised there hasn't been more written about the link between the decimilsation of the Kreuzer and Tom Wills's letter in Bell's Life less than 12 months later. --Roisterer (talk) 12:14, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I must say the pre-decimal Kreuzer was a real pain to use... was it 6 or 8 Kreuzers to the Fev and I could never remember how many Gibbs it was to the Kreuzer! Back to the Q. A clue: Brad Fisher was the 1400th and only one other similar record is over 1000, but it's unlikely to increase any higher.The-Pope (talk) 09:21, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
1500th player to debut that was born in the 1980's. Gnangarra 10:45, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
1500th player drafted to play senior football? --Roisterer (talk) 01:37, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A (hopefully) final clue: Player #1 in this record occurred in 1897, #100 in 1905,#500 in 1940, #1000 in 1986. Often you can't identify a single player for these other records.The-Pope (talk) 03:08, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I take it the answer is not "1500th player whose surname ends with "er"? --Roisterer (talk) 08:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC) (clutching at straws now).[reply]
1500th 19year old to play, clutching a soggy paper straw Gnangarra 08:23, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, final clue. #1501 was John Anthony. #1502 was Ben Ross. #1494 was Jake Edwards. #1495 was Nathan Brown. #1496-1499 are Cale Morton, Cyril Rioli, Cameron Stokes, Isaac Weetra. The-Pope (talk) 13:16, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Changing Gnangarra's answer slightly, the 1500th to play AFL football (i.e. since it became the AFL in 1990). πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 03:51, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that can't be right. I was about to say 1500th player 200cm or greater to play VFL/AFL. But that can't be right. The 1500th teenager to play the game? i.e. debuting at an age lower than 20. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 03:57, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think Jake Edwards was already 20 when he debuted so it can't be that. It seems that we are putting the Pope through great anguish. Perhaps he could tell us who isn't one of the 1500. --TheGrantley (talk) 06:06, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Almost as much anguish as when I'm watching a Freo laat quarter! Yes, it's debut related, no it's not related to age, name, DOB, height, weight, appearance, club from or to, zodiac sign or phases of the moon. If this was the cricket site I could ask a very similar question about Phil Jaques as #88 or David Hookes as #75. The-Pope (talk) 08:49, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like Hookesy and Jaques both made their debuts at the MCG so I'll go with that.Jonesy (talk) 08:56, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
YES. I'd give you a big Merv Hughes ear lick and a we're a happy team at Hawthorn style Sam Mitchell to Mark Williams style mankiss for finally getting it. Only MC Hammer park also had over 1000 debuts and most of the other traditional Melbourne grounds were in the 900s. Kardinya Park leads the way of the still used grounds with 400, with the others all under 200. I used Wikipedia:WikiProject_AFL/Debuts to work it out. Finally, over to you, Mr Rocks. The-Pope (talk) 09:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Which former teammate was Dermie talking about when he said 'I once saw him roll up a family size pizza and eat it like a falaffel'? Jonesy (talk) 21:54, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take the obvious guess... The Chief?The-Pope (talk) 22:34, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that question lasted 40 minutes - Bunghole/Piggy/The Chief it is. Dermie rang Triple M during a phone-in and gave the lowdown on Dunstall's dietary habits. Over to you The-Pope. Jonesy (talk) 23:49, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Before the last 3 diabolical games from Freo, who & when was the last time a team lost 3 rounds in a row by a goal or less? The-Pope (talk) 23:57, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q200

[edit]

Thanks Pope - by the way - is that you in my footy tipping comp??? (if it is, don't confirm its geographich location, no one needs to know where I work). Speaking of geographic location, a few bullies recently visited Canberra on a bit of a publicity trip. My mate and his four year old kid got a photo with four of them. One is a young player who only played one game last year, but has just about played every game this year (can't quite remember, must be close to all, sorry about being so imprecise and lazy). One is injured who would just about be in our best 25 but who hasn't played this year and was taken in the same draft as Cooney. Another is a midfield regular who has played every game this year. Another is forward/midfielder who has also just about played every game this year and one or two years ago pipped Lucas Neill as the sexiest Australian sportsman in some superficial comp somewhere. First one to name all four doggies correctly, first name and surname, is the winner. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 03:37, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So, recapping our four clues:

  1. The young player who played only one game last year, but had played all games this year, did not play against North yesterday.
  2. The player who hadn't played all year and was drafted in the same year as Cooney, did play yesterday (first game this year).
  3. The midfileder who has played every game this year, played yesterday and was one of the Bulldogs' biggest possession getters.
  4. The forward/midfielder who won some sexiest sportsman of the year comp also played yesterday, and in fact was the one that passed the ball to Johnno, who marked one second before the siren to give the Bulldogs the chance to win, but he missed after the siren (grrr). --πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 00:55, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know that I'm working on this, I'll say that Farren Ray is player number 2. Be back soon with the rest (he says perhaps too confidently). --Roisterer (talk) 01:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad someone is thinking about it?! I won't confirm individual players, I'll just say yes or no each time someone presents all four (so as not to disadvantage those working on it as assiduously as yourself!).
So, my guess is Farren Ray, Josh Hill, Daniel Giansiracusa and Matthew Boyd. --Roisterer (talk) 07:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well done - 100% correct first time! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 07:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
