I am curious. I had an article denied because "it used copyrighted material". That is true. But the material was quoted and the source given in the preceding sentence. This is the standard way material is referenced in scientific papers (e.g. According to so-and-so: "quoted stuff"). It appears has different rules. I would be glad to correct the problem. The quote was from the official description of an award. It cannot be paraphrased. What does it need? I could add a footnote detailing the source, which I had already given. Or, should I get permission from the copyright owner (i.e. Usenix) to use the quote? Or?

Correct to my previous question. The quote that "was copyrighted material" was referenced with a footnote in the sentence previous to it. So, the source was named, it was pointed to on the web with a footnote, and it was quoted. I don't know how else to give credit than through these mechanisms. So, I really do need help on understanding this.

Reply - I've reviewed the article submission you created, and it does not appear that it is cited properly either by Wikipedia or academic standards. That said, specific academic citation practices aren't what are generally followed here, so there is no need to discuss that.
