New Edited Article

I wrote an article on September 4 that was denied because it had no references. I have since added 5 references but can't figure out how to tell if it is back in the list to be reviewed and accepted as a page. It is for the Santa Fe Disco Brawlers. The article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Santa Fe Disco Brawlers was resubmitted. I just reviewed and declined it. When you want to re-submit it for review, click the link that says "When you are ready to resubmit, click here." or add {{subst:submit}} at the top of the article.
You added some references, but you need independent references to reliable sources. Facebook pages are almost never reliable sources, and team pages are not independent. It is best if you cite the references inline, so that readers know which source citation supports which fact or facts.
You need to look seriously at notability and read WP:ORG. it is very unusual that a local sports team will be found to be notable. DES (talk) 21:02, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Listing a biography

I have been trying for a while to list a biography on Professor Sir Tim Wilson. Each time I list it, I am told I need to make changes so that it complies with Wikipedia's rules and regulations, which is fine. However, I listed (what I hoped was) the final version in mid-August and have received comments as to what further edits I need to make but I do not understand the comments!!!! Can you please help me?

  • The article was declined because it was unreferenced. Wikipedia works by taking information found in reliable sources, and creating articles out of that information. Therefore, a new article must have references to several reliable sources (such as newspapers, books or magazines) before it can pass.
The page was blanked because the reviewer felt there were sensitive problems with it being a biography of a living person. Having looked through the blanked content, however, I can't find anything obviously disparaging or contentious with it, and the article seems to just factually mention what he's done without stating any opinion about it. I have unblanked the content so you can carry on working with it. However, I still can't pass the article as it's unsourced, as described above.
Also, your username gives me the impression that you are Tim Wilson. You should avoid writing articles about yourself, and get somebody else to do them. For example, if (heaven forbid) multiple tabloid and broadsheet papers decide you've had an affair with someone and it goes on their front page, and you subsequently deny it, it can still go in your article even if it's not true. Biography for Review

I have submitted the draft biography for Sir Tim Wilson for review once more. I submitted the biography for review, but somehow an older version of the draft was reviewed. The one I have submitted for review is the copy which has a list of references at the bottom. I think there is an issue with the layout of the references, but I cannot work out what the problem is. Can you help?

I should also stress that although my login is Professor1949, that is just my username. My full name is Anne-Marie Bell and I am writing about Professor Wilson because I used to work with him and think that he is a person of note and interest worth listing on Wikipedia.

  • I've had a look at the new version of the draft, and while there are now references, I still can't pass the article, as they're mostly either unreliable sources (Wikipedia articles should never be used to cite other Wikipedia articles) or primary sources (they belong to organisations the article's subject is directly involved in, which are fine for asserting facts, but not suitable to establish notability). The best reference seems to the first one, which is the article in The Guardian here; unfortunately that only briefly mentions Wilson in the first paragraph and nowhere else - indeed the actual subject of the article is a new campus on Hertfordshire University. You need significant coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources in order for an article to be considered notable and pass a review. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What to do? If you know the language, go to [[th:โรงเรียนมัธยมวัดเบญจมบพิตร]] (Mathayom Wat Benjamabopit School) and steal all of their reliable sources for re-use in your own article when no one is looking? :heh:
If you translate any text from that article into the English-language Wikipedia, then you will need to acknowledge in your article's edit history that you've "imported translated text from [[th:โรงเรียนมัธยมวัดเบญจมบพิตร]] under a Creative Commons (BY-SA) licence". There are a number of non-free images (including the school's logo) in the original page - because they're copyrighted they're not on commons: so to use them you'll need to request they be copied on files for upload and provide a translation of whatever fair use rationale appears on the original image description page.
Certainly, an article can exist on a topic in more than one language; there is a means to have links to all of the other-language versions appear as "in other languages" at the bottom of the left sidebar once your page is created (it doesn't work on talk pages). To do this, just list them prefixed by the language code - for instance Switzerland contains:
[[de:Schweitz]]
[[fr:Suisse]]
and at least a couple of others. When editing a page, these interwiki links are usually at or near the bottom of the text. K7L (talk) 13:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note that although you may translate text or find references from the Thai-language version, you don't have to. If you find this a problem, and you can find sufficient independent reliable sources on your own, in whatever language, you may write an article from scratch if you so choose. Hello, I am trying to incorporate and adjust a draft I have created that was recently declined. I would like your assessment and guidance on this matter. As I understand the reason for declining the submission it is based on the "golden rule" and my sense is that the lacking elements are the quantity of independent sources to validate the entry. I believe some of those exist in my submission and would like to see if a) you agree and b) if you do agree to offer some advise on how many more are needed to make this a true submission.

Obviously if there are other specific issues that need to be addressed I would like some clear and quantifiable commentary about what those things are which are lacking and how to improve it.

I am also not the strongest writer and would value any grammatical or prose advise. Thanks much.

  • Basically, you need significant coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources. Click here to see a fuller description, but basically you need to have several well known newspapers and magazines that are known for having a professional editorial control policy write about your article's subject as often as possible, going into some depth.
Looking at the sources provided, of the ones that have links, The Houston Events and Artshound references look like unreliable sources because the "Login" button on each suggests that anyone can register and add events in here - therefore there is no editorial control. The Mass. College of Art link is a primary source as it's relating to something related very closely to the article's subject. While you can use primary sources for basic facts, you can't use them to establish notability. So, in summary, you'll need to find some more sources - try a "News" or "Books" Google search and see if that helps.
Regarding spelling and formatting - a good article (or even a good article ;-D) needs these fixed, but that's not a reason to decline an AfC submission. It's really all about the notability and the verifiability here. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:12, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Place {{subst:submit}} at the top of the article when you are ready, if the automated link isn't displaying. Please be sure that you have dealt with the comments from the previous decline, as best as you are able to. There may be a delay as there are many drafts in the backlog.
