Our goals

The project focuses on articles about everything related to Van Halen, including but not limited to: current and former members, albums and songs, and notable musical instruments associated with the band.

Assessment

The assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of project-supported articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work. The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WPVANHALEN}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in a set of categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.

Guidelines

The guidelines presented in this section are intended to be guidelines only; while they are well-suited for the vast majority of Van Halen articles, there exist a number of peculiar cases where, for lack of a better solution, alternate approaches can been taken. Please discuss individual cases on the Project talk page when deviating from guidelines.

Article structure

The guidelines in this section are intended to serve as a starting point for writing a good article; they are not meant to enforce a single structure on all articles, nor to limit the topics an article will discuss. Remember to cite your sources!

• For personnel, follow the article guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians/Article guidelines.
• For albums, follow the article guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums.
• For songs, follow the article guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs.

Images

Include educational images in article whenever possible. Free images are always preferred. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to use copyrighted images with valid fair use rationales, especially to illustrate album and song articles. See Wikipedia:Image use policy for the overall policy; see Wikipedia:Non-free content for details on what copyrighted images are acceptable fair use. If in doubt, ask on the project talk page before uploading a copyrighted image.

To request photos for an article, use {{Image requested|of=xxx|in=yyy}}, where xxx is what you what a photo of and yyy is the geographic location where you think a Wikipedian could take such a photograph.

Infobox templates

Use the following infoboxes depending on the subject of the article:

• Infobox musical artist for band members and associated personnel.
• Infobox album for Van Halen albums and music DVD's.
• Infobox song for Van Halen singles, album tracks and B-sides.
• Infobox artist discography for discography.
• Infobox concert for concert tours.
• Audio sample for audio clips.

Categories

Articles should be placed in the most specific applicable categories, and should not be placed directly in a "parent" category if they are already present in one of its sub-categories. In other words, if an article is placed in Category:Van Halen members, there is no need to place it in Category:Van Halen as well.

Project banner

The {{WPVANHALEN}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. The full syntax is as follows:

General parameters:

• class – a rating of the article's quality; see the assessment department for more details.
• attention – "yes" if the article requires immediate attention; this should be used sparingly.
