Tip of the Day
[edit]Tip of the moment...
Flashback to Wikipedia's past
Nostalgia is a link to what Wikipedia looked like back in 2001 when we had only 19,000 articles. The English Wikipedia now has over 6,937,467 articles. ( to refresh number). The five-millionth article, Persoonia terminalis, about a rare shrub, was written by an editor in Australia just after midnight on November 1, 2015. To view an archived version of Wikipedia between 2001 and now, see the Wayback Machine. – – To add this auto-randomizing template to your user page, use {{totd-random}}

Tip of the day...
Digital audio support
Wikipedia uses the Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and WAV formats for audio, as they are not encumbered by patents (an issue that prompted the decision that MP3 files will not be hosted at Wikipedia). Software supporting Vorbis exists for many platforms... Mozilla Firefox 4, Opera 10.5 and Google Chrome 3 (and later versions) each include their own support for Ogg Vorbis files. As for multimedia players, Winamp can be used to play Ogg Vorbis files. Although iTunes does not natively support Vorbis, Xiph.Org provides a QuickTime component which can be used in players that rely on QuickTime, such as iTunes, on both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. DirectShow filters exist to decode Vorbis in multimedia players like Windows Media Player and others which support DirectShow. Various online tools (such as Zamzar) are available which let you freely convert one file format into another, and can be useful when you want to upload a file to Wikipedia. – – To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd3}}
|
The Tip of the Day project provides a different piece of advice for using Wikipedia every day. Like the Picture of the Day, you can include it on your userpage by adding {{totd}} somewhere (at the top of your talk page is a good place for it). The randomized version (displayed above) is {{totd-random}}, and shows a different tip each time it is displayed on your screen. Other formats for the TOTD exist, such as the more compact {{totd3}}, or you can make your own by including {{Wikipedia:Tip of the day/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} on your userpage (which includes the raw text, without any formatting) and then enclose it in your own formatting. To float the tip of the day to the right of content (as it is displayed here), place this code where you want the tip to show up: {{right|{{totd3}}}}.

[edit]A spin off of the tip of the day, this is another template that provides useful instruction a little at a time.

Pics and images
[edit]There is a huge selection of pictures on Wikipedia and its sister site Wikimedia Commons. Pictures can be a powerful way to express yourself...
Pictures can be found all over Wikipedia, but it can be very time-consuming to hunt for them in the encyclopedia's articles. Another option is to browse Wikipedia's collections...

Michael William Balfe (1808–1870) was an Irish composer, best remembered for his operas. Balfe was born in Dublin and grew up on Pitt Street, which was renamed Balfe Street in 1917 in his honour. After moving to Wexford with his family as a child, he began a career as a violinist, moving to London in 1823 after his father's death, later relocating again to Italy and Switzerland, where he married the Hungarian-born singer Lina Roser. Balfe began pursuing an operatic singing career as well as composition, and moved back to London with his family in 1835. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he composed at least 29 operas, almost 250 songs, several cantatas, and other works. He was also a noted conductor, directing Italian opera at Her Majesty's Italian Opera House for seven years, among other conducting posts. His most notable opera is The Bohemian Girl, which continues to be performed. This photograph of Balfe was taken by the studio of the French photographer Nadar; this albumen print was made in 1900.
