Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

  • Continued semester-long project with Edinburgh University Translation Society to translate an article on one language Wikipedia into a different language Wikipedia and thereby increasing cross-cultural understanding.
  • Continued planning arrangements and Call for Papers for the first 'Celtic Knot': Wikipedia Language Conference at the University of Edinburgh on 5 & 6 July 2017. Focused on supporting Celtic and Indigenous language Wikipedias shocasing innovative approaches in open knowledge, open education and open date to support language communities.

  • Nancy Loudon - Family planning pioneer, formerly medical co-ordinator of the Lothian Family Planning and Well Woman Services.

  • Rebecca Strong - English nurse who pioneered preliminary training for nurses.
  • Kate Hermann - the first female neurology consultant in Scotland. Hermann, who was Jewish, left with her family from Hamburg to London in 1937, fleeing the Nazis. She then moved, in 1938, to Edinburgh to study at the Royal Infirmary under Professor Norman Dott.
  • Anne_Ferguson (physician) - Scottish physician, clinical researcher and expert in inflammatory bowel disease. In 1987 she was appointed to a personal professorship in gastroenterology, and was honoured by election as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1990.

  • Krystyna Magdalena Munk - a Polish doctor who completed her studies at the Polish School of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh during World War II.
  • Elizabeth Wilson (doctor) - Family Planning Doctor and Right-to-Die campaigner. She founded the 408 Clinic, and FATE (Friends at the End) in 2000.

  • Thomas Keith (doctor) - Added Early life, photographic career, surgical career. A Victorian surgeon and amateur photographer from Scotland. He developed and improved the wax paper process and his photographs are recognised for their composition and use of shade. He was an early practitioner of the operation of ovariotomy (ovarian cystectomy) where his published results were amongst the best in the world.
  • Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service - Infobox added and images relocated.
  • Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia - 3 paragraphs added. The Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia was a medical guide consisting of recipes and methods for making medicine. It was first published by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1699 as the Pharmacopoea Collegii Regii Medicorum Edimburgensium.
  • Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh - more information about the future of the hospital added and the various buildings on the current site.
  • Infobox added to Hanna Segal - British psychoanalyst and a follower of Melanie Klein. She was president of the British Psychoanalytical Society, vice-president of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and was appointed to the Freud Memorial Chair at University College, London (UCL) in 1987. James Grotstein considered that "Received wisdom suggests that she is the doyen of "classical" Kleinian thinking and technique."
  • Information added about the Polish School of Medicine to the article about Francis Albert Eley Crew - English animal geneticist. He was a pioneer in his field leading to Edinburgh’s place as a world leader in the science of animal genetics. He is said to have laid the foundations of medical genetics.

  • Agnes Syme Macdonald (1882 - 1996) was a Scottish suffragette who served as the secretary of the Edinburgh branch of the WSPU before setting up the Edinburgh Women Citizens Association (WCA) in 1918.

  • Kathleen Molyneux Mander (29th September 1915 − 2013) was a documentary film-maker. She had a column in the ACT journal, The Cine-Technician, until the 1950s, where she wrote union issues such as the need for equal pay and post-war job security. After the end of WW2 her membership of the Communist party made it more difficult for her to find work.
  • Emilia Vosnesenskaya - Vosnesenskaya taught Russian at the Joint Services School for Linguists.
  • Kay Carmichael (née Rankin) born Shettleston, Glasgow on 22 November 1925. She was an influential character in Scottish politics and activist against nuclear submarines in Scotland.
  • Şükûfe Nihal Başar - (1896 - 24 September 1973) was a Turkish educator, poet and activist who took part in the earliest women's liberation movements during Turkey's nation building process.
  • Elizabeth Burns (poet) - (1957-2015) was a poet and creative writing teacher.
  • Lucrezia Buti (Florence, 1435 - sixteenth century) was an Italian nun, and later the lover of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. She is believed to be the model for several of Lippi's madonnas.

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

  • Delivered talk on Wikipedia as the Front Matter to All Research at the Royal Observatory for colleagues at the School of Astronomy. Also discussed with event organiser, Eric Tittley, how related Wikipedia pages could be updated/created and how astronomical data could in theory be added to datasets already on Wikidata.
  • Ran a Wikidata workshop with Navino Evans (Histropedia) at the Wikimedia UK Education Summit at Middlesex University.
  • Gave a lightning talk on the University of Edinburgh residency at the Wikimedia UK Education Summit at Middlesex University.
  • Discussed holding a Wikidata data hackathon at Repository Fringe 2017 in August with Pauline Ward and Navino Evans.
  • Continued discussions with Dr. Martin Poulter to collaborate on 2 of the 4 sessions the resident will be delivering to the OER17 Conference on 5-6 April 2017 (1 presentation on the Edinburgh Residency, 1 lightning talk on Content Translation, 1 lightning talk on the WikiCite project and 1 workshop on Gamifying Wikimedia).
  • Wrote 3 blog articles on the Wikimedian in Residence blog.
  • Discussed with Gillian Daly (Scottish Public Libraries) and Elena Trimarchi (National Trust) about Wikimedia events & residencies.
  • Beyond this, we have also been notified of impact further afield as the Eurostemcell Editathon event we ran with the University of Edinburgh's MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine led to further editathons with their European research partner labs, including:
  1. At the HumEn consortium meeting in Copenhagen, Ole Palnatoke Andersen palnatoke@gmail.com presented a 90 minute workshop about Wikimedia to the consortia’s PhD and post docs (29/11/2016)
  2. The next day Ole ran a Wikipedia editathon on material as per our workshop in April with 8 scientists from Danstem and BRIC, Copenhagen university (30/11/2016)

To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.

  • Edited and uploaded 4 video interviews including: one with a Reproductive Biology student discussing the Wikipedia assignment from last semester; one with Translation Studies MSc students; one with World Christianity MSc students and finally one with World Christianity MSc course leader, Dr. Alex Chow.
  • Supported Open Education Resource advisor, Stephanie Farley, leading her first editathon at the Gender, Global Health and Justice editathon. She is keen to undertake more Wikipedia editathons.
  • Supported the Translation Studies MSc and Edinburgh University Translation Society students so that they can get much-needed published translation practice in translation and develop an ongoing relationship with Wikimedia UK.
  • Held a Wikipedia in Education: Event for Course Leaders event for 1st March 2017 so course leaders from last semester (Dr. Alex Chow and Dr. Hephzibah Israel) could share their good practice.
  • Created a 60 page lesson plan for course leaders on How to run a Wikipedia training session with accompanying slide deck. Now uploaded to Wiki Commons and shortly to be uploaded to TES.
  • Arranged a How to run a Wikipedia editathon: Staff Skills Training event (inside & outside the curriculum) on Friday 17th March 2017.
  • Wrote up 3 case studies of the 3 assignments the residency supported in the curriculum last semester. Now uploaded on to Wiki Commons and submitted to the Institute of Academic Development (IAD) to be included on their Wiki too.
  • Continued to support the Semester 2 assignment in Translation Studies MSc where the students are this time asked to translate 2000 words in the reverse language direction from last semester.
  • Met with Lauren Gawne and Lauren Hall-Lew of the Linguistics department with a view to investigating a potential #Lingwiki collaboration in the future.
  • Met with Dr. S. Orestis Palermos to discuss his research on Wikipedia as Social Machine and put him in contact with Wikimedian Ed Saperia to further collaborate on this research.
  • Met with Valeri Wiegel to discuss a Science, Technology and Innovation Studies editathon.

Collections identified for potential future upload:

  • Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, has uploaded a test case of Thomas Jehu's PhD thesis to Wikisource during the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February 2017 and is looking to upload selected other PhD theses and Open Books to Wikisource in the coming months.
  • A WiR and Library proposal has been drafted.
  • Paul Barnaby is liaising with Navino Evans to see if Histropedia can be employed with the Our History site.
  • We have been given permission to upload images where WW1 nurse orderly Ethel Moir is the creator from the Capital Collections website.

Projects/events in development

  • Held initial discussions with Stephen Kaye on the Mastercard Scholarship Foundation to hold an African Alumni & Swahili editathon in the future (to be determined).
  • Brief discussions with Susan Ross, Gaelic Wikimedian at National Library of Scotland, about a joint NLS-Edinburgh University editathon.
  • Held initial discussions with Ruth Burgon (Fruitmarket Gallery) about an editathon themed on art and artists in November 2017 with potential involvement from the History of Art course.
  • Four sessions for the OER17 conference in London on 5th & 6th April have been confirmed and are being prepared.
  • Planned in another 'Teaching with Wikipedia' session for course leaders on 3rd April 2017 so Dr. Harlow and Dr. Greg Singh can share best practice with colleagues.
  • While the History of Veterinary Medicine 2017 Wikipedia event for students had to be cancelled, it is hoped that there will be a future opportunity in the Summertime.
  • Continued discussions with Lorna Campbell and Daria Cybulska for the Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference on 5 & 6 July 2017. Venues have been secured at the Business School and a list of potential speakers/presenters is being prepared following the Call for Papers closing on 17th March 2017.
