The women's poll tax repeal movement in the United States was the attempt, predominantly led by women, to secure the abolition of poll taxes as a prerequisite for voting in the Southern states. After women were granted the right to vote in 1920, some Southern states introduced or expanded poll tax statutes in order to disenfranchise them. In response, women began organizing to repeal these laws (poster pictured), initially to little effect. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, both black and white women pressed at state and national levels for the abolition of these laws, and also filed lawsuits. Louisiana abandoned its poll tax law in 1932, and the number of women voters increased by 77%. Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas followed. In 1964, the Twenty-fourth Amendment was passed, prohibiting poll taxes as a barrier to voting in federal elections. The Supreme Court finally ended the struggle after four decades in their ruling on Harper v. Virginia State Board of Elections in 1966. (Full article...)

- Reasons for nomination: IWD preferred. - I am sorry that I could not trim the blurb further, - help? Tough to cover 40 year. I could imagine the last sentence cut which is only about the last two, so to speak ... but has a good link.
- I have trimmed the blurb to 1,016 characters. (There is a hard limit of 1,025, which includes spaces.) Just a draft, see what you think. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:59, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

- Support. A wonderful article and the sort of thing that Wikipedia should be promoting, and using to promote itself. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:21, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks @Gerda Arendt and Gog the Mild:. Really appreciate your help. I am not sure if as the main editor I can support, but if so, I do. I am temporarily out of pocket and have limited computer access. My sister broke her hip and I am having to help her for the time being. Will check in as I can. - Support: the topic of voter suppression is topical and it deserves more awareness. The article looks to be in good shape. Praemonitus (talk) 19:07, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
