Ian Michael Chappell (born 26 September 1943) is a former cricketer who played for South Australia and Australia. Known as "Chappelli", he captained Australia between 1971 and 1975 before taking a central role in the breakaway World Series Cricket organisation. Chappell made a start to playing as a right-hand middle-order batsman and spin bowler. He was then promoted to bat at number three. The issue of sledging first arose during his tenure as captain, and he was a driving force behind the professionalisation of Australian cricket in the 1970s. He was the captain of the Australian squad which finished as runners-up at the 1975 Cricket World Cup. Since his retirement in 1980, he has pursued a career as a sports journalist and cricket commentator, mostly with Channel Nine. Chappell was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1986, the FICA Cricket Hall of Fame in 2000, the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2003 and the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. - Oppose until further work done (and possibly send for further review). It's not in terrible shape but I don't think it would pass as a FA today. Multiple unsourced statements inline, and one unsourced section ("Captaincy statistics"). The prose is very stats heavy and there's relatively little commentary on his playing style which would add a bit of colour/depth. There's also a reliance on block quotes. The multiple sections on feuds with / critiques of other players doesn't seem very encyclopedic. His views on Steve Waugh's captaincy might have seemed quite relevant at the time the article was written but now it seems like overkill. I also have a feeling that some of the statements in the article – e.g. "Chappell now lives in Sydney and works as an advertising professional" (to paraphrase) – are out of date and need to be reviewed against more recent sources. - Oppose. I think ITBF's assessment is fair. Since promotion to FA in 2007, not only has the standard required for FA's increased, but in the 17-years that have elapsed, a lot of unsourced and poor edits have occured to the article. It needs a substantial rewrite to adhere to current FA standards, not least with referencing. Otherwise, it might need a reassessment if improvements aren't made. AA (talk) 20:08, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
