  • LOC shutdown: The Library of Congress’ website, an essential resource to many cataloguers, researchers, and library professionals, is closed as a result of the US federal government shutdown. The Internet Archive is maintaining links to archived versions of much of the website: Internet Archive blog post
    Update: As of Friday, October 18th, the LOC website and catalogues are back online.
  • Dominic MDP goes full time at NARA:Wikipedian Dominic McDevitt-Parks has been named to a new, full-time position with the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. The post reflects the ongoing efforts by National Archivist David Ferriero to marry NARA’s extensive archival collections with Wikipedia. NARA blog post
  • Getty releases images:The J. Paul Getty Museum, a renowned institution in Los Angeles, releases 4,500 more images for public use. Antiques and Fine Arts Magazine article
  • CERN releases images: The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory, has released its photos under a Creative Commons CC-BY license. CERN blog post
  • WikiProject Open launches: WikiProject Open kicked off in October, with several brainstorming and co-working sessions led by User:Peteforsyth. The WikiProject has two main goals: first, to improve Wikimedia content with the help of openly licensed materials, and second, to improve Wikipedia articles related to openness (including open access publishing, open educational resources, etc.). WikiProject Open is a big tent organizing portal for open access, open data, open science, and open educational resources. Sign up and get involved!
  • JSTOR takes a step towards open access: JSTOR launched JPASS, offering individuals access to 1,500 journals. In March 2012 JSTOR’s Register & Read program gave individuals ability to register and read 3 free, online articles every two weeks.
  • UC goes OA: University of California adopts open access policy with free online database
  • Cambridge alums get JSTOR: Cambridge University gives alumni free access to JSTOR
