[edit]"List of killings" templates
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the template below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the template's talk page or in a deletion review).
The result of the discussion was withdrawn. Some fair points have been made regarding the use/management of such header templates. (non-admin closure) Primefac (talk) 21:49, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
- Template:List of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States, Description (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
- Template:Estimates of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
- Template:List of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States, See also (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
- Template:List of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States 2012, header (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
These templates fail WP:TMPG, as they simply take a huge block of text and pull it out of the article. On this page it's literally the only thing on the page. I am recommending these templates be substituted and deleted. If a new "List of" article is created, the text can be copy/pasted from the existing pages. Primefac (talk) 19:45, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- These templates make up the boilerplate introductory sections in a largish set of list articles. What alternative solution would you propose for the long-term maintainability of this text? Uanfala (talk) 20:14, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Uanfala, re-read my last sentence. Primefac (talk) 20:36, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Copy-and-pasting into newly created articles deals with... well, newly created articles. The question I was trying to ask was: how are changes going to be made to the boilerplate text in already existing ones? Uanfala (talk) 20:41, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Um... clicking the edit box? I guess I am not understanding what you are asking. Primefac (talk) 20:45, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- This text is used in a large number of articles. What if it needs to be changed, for example, a link could be updated, a phrasing clarified etc. Should editors click the edit box and then make the change and then repeat that 66 times? Should they place a bot request for that? Isn't this precisely the situation that templates are designed to help with? Uanfala (talk) 20:54, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- In direct answer to your question: if something needs changing, it would need to be manually changed. However, the templates listed have been edited less than ten times each in the last year (two none at all), which makes me think that they're pretty much reached "static" status. - Uanfala, re-read my last sentence. Primefac (talk) 20:36, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep per the discussion above. Substing the templates would make it unreasonably laborious to maintain the standard text and formatting, which are used on dozens of pages. Uanfala (talk) 21:25, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe worth pointing out that although the storing of chunks of article text isn't what templates are predominantly used for, this is nevertheless a function they not infrequently do: for example in the ledes of year articles (like 1910) or the "features" sections of articles about speech sounds (like this one). Uanfala (talk) 09:55, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep - Unless a better template is suggested, I suggest keeping these, since some of them do a great job of automatically tracking certain numbers. --Jax 0677 (talk) 22:04, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep. The templates serve a purpose and the articles would be difficult to maintain without them. -- Millionsandbillions (talk) 18:19, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was Delete (non-admin closure) Primefac (talk) 01:00, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Associated award article has been deleted as non-notable. Template allows navigation among only four articles, and is no more than marginally useful. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by administrators since 2006. (talk) 19:24, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Delete as template of limited usefulness and due to the fact that an associated article does not exist. K.e.coffman (talk) 02:05, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Associated award article has been deleted as non-notable. Template allows navigation among only three articles, and is negligibly useful. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by administrators since 2006. (talk) 19:13, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was withdrawn by nominator. Per Rob Sinden's rational. Non-admin closure. Safiel (talk) 13:53, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- Template:White Collar (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Under-developed navigation box. Only one transclusion. Little likely hood of any future need for this. Safiel (talk) 18:04, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep. Seems that this topic has been the victim of some vandalism. The navbox was removed from the articles with this series of edits and some of the articles (all GAs!) were redirected with this series of edits. --Rob Sinden (talk) 12:18, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
