Template:Big Brother sidebar (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Redundant to {{Infobox television}}, which should be used instead. ViperSnake151  Talk  22:54, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just look on any page for a show other than this. It contains all the fields needed for specifying dates, networks, hosts, producers, etc. A certain show does not require special treatment like this. ViperSnake151  Talk  23:47, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see, so can't provide a specific example? in that case, keep since it's not clear how it will be replaced. Frietjes (talk) 00:05, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kan 26 (talk) 18:34, 29 June 2014 (UTC): A custom infobox, if allowed.[reply]

If all the relevant information from the Big Brother sidebar can be merged into the Infobox television sidebar then I would see it as redundant. However you can't put the spin-off shows that air while the main program airs into it which is relevant information. So in this case I say keep unless information can be moved over to Infobox Television in an acceptable way. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 17:49, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Unix internals (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Template:Unix (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Propose redirecting Template:Unix internals to Template:Unix.
Redundant template. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 09:33, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Seems logical enough, or at least make the smaller template such that it can be transcluded into the larger one so there's no blatant duplication. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 12:12, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel there's any need for that. The parent template already covers the nominated template's subject matter in its entirety. The biggest problem we have here is the high potential for duplication if this is simply redirected rather than deleted. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 16:41, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What duplication do you anticipate? — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 06:32, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I hadn't realised that the nominated template had already been orphaned. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:02, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it was recently accepted via WP:AFC and was not used yet at all. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 22:14, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete it's an orphaned, verbatim copied attempt at a POV fork that resulted from a content dispute. The template creator was trying to remove mobile operating systems from Template:Unix on the grounds that they lack a command line and therefore aren't Unix-like, even though the systems themselves directly contain code/modules from one of the major Unix-like branches, and therefore are internally Unix-like. Hence trying to create a fork for systems that are internally Unix-like. An abandoned, half baked scheme that was rejected. oknazevad (talk) 12:58, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Android doesn't have a (user-visible) Command line interpreter (CLI) - the only user-interface (UI) of original Unix. Yes, it has a shell for use by apps only (one of those apps could be an add-on terminal emulator providing the user interface, currently not done nor intended, by design, in AOSP/stock Android). My clarification was reverted.[1] It seems to me a separate template for restricted "Unix-like" is needed. Grouping OSes with the original UI of Unix (much used every day, by me and other) and OSes without anything similar (eg. shell pipelines for end-users to use programs together - the Unix way, see Unix philosophy), gives the wrong idea - making Unix-like meaningless to me and others. comp.arch (talk) 15:06, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was already discussed to death: default Android (AOSP) includes CLI – mksh. It lacks terminal emulators, but it is common in embedded Linux world. It surprisingly lacks ssh by default, but many older Unices, including original Unix system, also do not include it. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 16:57, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Android doesn't have a CLI - as a user interface, only a shell for internal use by programs. The Unix way is not just to use the shell to invoke *a* program but to use them together (a form of programming, by the 'user' if you will). Saying Andoid has a CLI is like saying Windows would still have a GUI if you couldn't use a mouse (or mouse emulation..) say be not including a mouse driver. comp.arch (talk) 16:03, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe my previous versions was better: Propose transcluding Template:Unix into Template:Unix internals. The former shouldn't include e.g. Android, but if I understand transclusion correctly, then the latter outer template can add Android and other not-quite-Unix-like. comp.arch (talk) 16:42, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Unix should include Android, and there is strong local consensus for this inclusion both on template's talk page as well as at Android (operating system). Furthermore, the name of template:Unix internals is inappropriate for its content, because the template is not about internals of Unix, but rather about Unix-like operating systems. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 17:03, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is an eccentric method of embedding information in an article and I wouldn't want it to become the norm. Template:Find sources notice ambox ‎  (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Would violate WP:ELNO if used; it's a copy of a template designed to be used only on talk pages. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 07:46, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Arthur Rubin:This template is a useful research tool, so I hope it won't be deleted. I created this template in order to find sources for specific sections of articles, such as this one. If this template were deleted, then all of the sources for this section (and several other sections) would be lost. Jarble (talk) 15:16, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of other cases where this template would be useful: for example, the Smalltalk article has a couple of sections that require additional sources, which could be found easily using the {{find sources notice ambox}} template. Jarble (talk) 18:57, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you truly believe that people are incapable of finding references unless appropriate search results links are shown directly to them, lobby for them to be included on {{refimprove}}. There is absolutely no use case for an additional template. And that is ignoring, once again, that there is a firm consensus against such links on mainspace going back years now. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:04, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This seems fair enough: we should avoid adding information to articles that is not helpful to the articles' readers. Jarble (talk) 01:47, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
