Template isn't needed any more, as it was replaced with {{subst:NAMESPACENUMBER}}. mabdul 21:48, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Maybe I'm missing something, but this redirect tag just seems too broad to be useful. Almost any redirect is an "alternative name," given the vagueness of that phrase. It would almost be more useful to tag redirects that don't work as alternative names. BDD (talk) 18:28, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Keep. Part of a widely used and useful set of templates; see Category:All redirect templates. The 63909 transclusions suggest that the community finds this useful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:08, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- I agree that redirect templates in general are useful; rest assured that this isn't a backdoor assault on them in general. But ultimately, all this one is saying is "this is a redirect." --BDD (talk) 22:06, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- This is saying this is a redirect from an alternative name, instead of from a subtopic or related term or viable search term that is not another name for the article. It clearly says it is an alternative name (and can serve as "documentation" saying that it is an alternative name, so someone may look more closely before dumping it to RFD as being unmentioned at the target article. (and making all our articles turn into dictionary entries with a long list of synonyms because we're deleting synonyms as being unmentioned)) -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 05:15, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

- Keep Helps to distinguish from, say, a shortened form of somebody's full name (see
{{R from short name}}
) or a more complete name of a person (see{{R from long name}}
), and several others. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:45, 16 July 2013 (UTC) - Keep. Redirects may not necessarily be an "alternative name". For example, we have {{R to section}} and {{R with possibilities}} to mark possible topics that may in the future be split into their own separate articles. We have redirects that go to a specific namespace. We have redirects for specific administrative purposes, such as marking merges, technical restrictions regarding article names, and so forth. And even though we have redirects that are more specific, like {{R to initialism}} or {{R from plural}}, {{R from alternative name}} is needed for redirects that do not fall into those specific categories. Zzyzx11 (talk) 02:37, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
- I've never truly seen the point in these redirect categories, but presumably we're better with universal coverage if we're going to bother at all. "Alternative name" isn't very specific, but that's perhaps the point - it's something to fall back on if the redirect doesn't fall into any other category. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
- Keep Most of the 'redirect from name' templates relate to variations on the page name, whereas this template does not imply any syntactic relation between the name of the target page and the name of the redirect page; in other words, the two names can be completely different under this template, unlike most other related templates. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 22:42, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
- Keep As per Chris Cunningham, I'm not really sure what the point of these categories is, but this one is useful if nothing more specific applies. Peter coxhead (talk) 12:39, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

This is a minor multi-sport event. It is not international as well as continental multi-sport event. Formerly, it was qualifying round for FIFA World Cup. It is REALLY not necessary. Banhtrung1 (talk) 15:33, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
