Template:Zoologist types by nationality (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Template:Fooian fooers (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Propose merging Template:Zoologist types by nationality with Template:Fooian fooers.
Since Fooian fooers covers all occupations at also covers zoologists. __meco (talk) 10:05, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Fooian biologist types (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Template:Fooian fooers (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Propose merging Template:Fooian biologist types with Template:Fooian fooers.
Since Fooian fooers covers all occupations at also covers biologists. Besides, the functionality of both templates seems to be identical. See also nomination below. __meco (talk) 09:13, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion for all three templates
[edit]

I see now that Template:Fooian biologist types adds an additional link, which for Category:Norwegian neuroscientists yields,

Classification: People: By occupation: Scientists: Biologists: Neuroscientists: By nationality: Norwegian
also: Norway: People: By occupation: Scientists: Biologists: Neuroscientists

Notice the first line, where Fooian fooers would produce for the first line, By occupation: Biologists:, i.e. omitting the next higher level of Scientists. __meco (talk) 09:52, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The third template added to the nomination, Template:Zoologist types by nationality in similar fashion adds yet another level, e.g. Scientists: Biologists: Zoologists: Entomologists. I'm unsure whether more similar sub-level templates will emerge in the course of this discussion. It would in any case seem both feasible and desirable to have the functionality of more levels of occupations added to one template by introducing added parameter fields, rather than by having all these more specialized templates which in a larger scheme would be difficult to maintain. __meco (talk) 10:10, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose all of these merges. If you look inside the templates, "Fooian scientists" categorizes pages into Category:Scientists. This is trivial and reliable to implement. To reproduce this function in a merged "Fooian fooers" template, then that template would have to either have (horrendous) logic embedded within it to recognise some trades as being "scientists" (and just imagine the edit-warring for whether -ology is automatically treated as a science, let alone homeopathy. More likely, an extra parameter would be needed so that the template call would acquire |group=sciencetists, which is now more complicated and less reliable against use misspellings. Fooian scientists is just simpler. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:40, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • refactor to have them call the generic template (for uniform presentation/maintenance), but keep separate due to the category logic and other issues. Frietjes (talk) 14:57, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
