City populations

[edit]

Am I the only one who finds List_of_largest_cities_in_South_Africa_by_population suspicious. It looks to me like it is based on district populations not city populations... It is in one of those boxy things on the bottom of pages too, so will be a job to fix/remove. Had a look at 2001 census site is a mess the way only the South African government beurocracy know's how... couldn't corroborate those figures. 198.54.202.242 17:17, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we will be able to complete that page once the 2011 Census (http://www.statssa.gov.za/census2011/) is done. AGrobler (talk) 09:28, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Anybody interested in South African history? I'm thinking about starting a WikiProject dedicated to expanding and improving the current coverage of the history of South Africa. If you think you would be interested then leave me a note; if there's clear interest then I'll start one off.

Requests

[edit]
  • I would love to add a few articles on South African plants - specifically of the fynbos and succulent varieties. Anyone else keen? Can anyone explain why Wikispecies has so little plant info compared to Wikipedia, and which is the more important to update for plants? This site has some nice resources Protea Atlas Project homepage. My talk page - AndrewMoir
  • I'm writing some articles about South African locomotives, especially steam locomotives, for the German Wikipedia. When I lived in South Africa (1976-1981), I was to small to take pictures, so I would be grateful if someone would make some PD pictures available for the Wikipedia. Please contact me here or on my user talk page. --FritzG 16:58, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help wanted in a hurry!

[edit]

Hello all on the South Africa portal. My name is Thor Malmjursson, and I recently tagged an article on Wikipedia about a South African quiz show, Noot vir Noot, hosted by Johan Stemmet. The issue is that the article is a copyright infringement of an Afrikaans language website here 1 albeit a translated copyvio. After reading some of the further research on this show on the net, I just realised how popular this show is, and the fact that unless the article is re-written within one week, it will get deleted, which from what I now know, is a great shame.

Could someone from the SA Portal or any associated wikiprojects, please see to re-writing this article so that there is no copy violation on it? Thanks very much. Thor Malmjursson 01:40, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SA authorities on the names of Geographic places

[edit]

If two South Africans disagreed on the names of geographic places, where would they turn for a definitive answer? In the UK, it's something like the HarperCollins' Times Atlas of the World, and in the US, it'd probably be the National Geographic Society or some such. Is/are there SA equivalents for these, or would they also turn to the Times Atlas or Nat Geo publications? Say someone wanted to check whether South Africans call it Bombay or Mumbai or if South Africans say Beijing or Peking. Chrisrus (talk) 19:06, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
