From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This workshop will take place on Fenruary 21st, it's a short activity with high school students of La Spezia. It later expande to another lesson of February, 28th and a third one on March, 21st.

The students will show their expertise with programs such as ChemDraws uploading missing 2D or 3D structural representations of molecules on Wikimedia Commons and articles on English wikipedia.

Proposed tasks

[edit]

c:Category:Methyl isobutyrateis an ideal example of a molecule with a category on commons where both 2D (vectorial) and 3D representations can be found. Let's try to get this coverage for other molecules, uploading what is missing.

(I will clean up their work this evening)--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:01, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

commons categories

[edit]

Exercise description

[edit]

Please remember:

  • check the IUPAC name in English;
  • add it to the file with the "+" sign, once saved you will see it red;
  • Please don't just copy and paste the name of a file as it is, use the IUPAC name;
  • remove previous categories if are the future parent categories of your new one;
  • click on the red link, insert the [[category:]] code for the parent category;
  • the parent category is usually already used in the file, you are replacing with a more specific one;
  • "publish" (blue button)

Examples for the class - first lesson:

Examples for the class - second lesson:

  • Meconic acid.svg, (example 3)  Done
  • category:18-Methoxycoronaridine molecule, show the corrections in front of the students

First lesson

[edit]
this was also created as "Category:2-Ethyl-2-oxazolin aus Propionaldehyd" copying the full name of a file by User:Lory03. I asked to delete the wrong name.--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:31, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
good, but you put the same category as a parent category, I add later a new one.--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:30, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
missing parent category.--Alexmar983 (talk) 18:14, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
created as "Category:2-Aminomuconic-acido-zwitterion-3D-balls" name of the file, deleted. it still has to be created.--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:36, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Still missing--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:36, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done as "Category:1-Methylnaphthalene 3D" and deleted see. Still can be created.--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:42, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
inserted as a red link, still missing--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:45, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
actually 2-methylpropene is c:Category:Isobutylene so there is no need to create it.
This has no sense to be created, toluol is another name of c:Category:Toluene (it's probably German, like Benzol for benzene)--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:45, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
why there is "molecule" in the title? The category is the IUPAC name or the most common name, so that shuld be "category:18-Methoxycoronaridine". We fix it at the lesson. I must fix it now, we will make a nother example nest lesson.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:17, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
parent categories improved
this is not the IUPAC name, it was made as a redirect to c:Category:1-methylcyclopropene (already existing)--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:24, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Second lesson - group 1

[edit]

Users who tried to made a category but did a mistake. I reassigned the same category (if it has sense) so it can be completed.

for: user:Nikidelcarro02, c:category:2-Aminomuconic-acid  Done
ok, not bad but you removed form the files some categories that are not related to the chemistry of functional groups (for example "created by user X" or "stick and balls"). Such categories are related to the single file. Please pay more attention to the meaining of what you are removing and pasting. Also, you put the "Category:2-Aminomuconic-acid" twice.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:30, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Users who did a category at the first lesson try to do another one:

For User:Antonio.Torzulli
For User:Martina.avino
It was created by User:Antonio.Torzulli but he put the same category as its parent category. I fixed also the generic categories which were left there--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:10, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More exercises. These examples are mostly drugs (with shorter non-IUPAC names). We don't use the IUPAC name since it is a drug, but it could be interesting to have it.

missing svg files

[edit]

Since we are not sure about the quality of svg files, we put this aspect on hold and we focus on missing 3D images.

missing 3D images

[edit]

Find missing 3D images. One possible way:

  • open a wikipedia article of a chemical coumpund (search in the bar for 1-nitro, 2-methyl, 1-ethyl, 1,2-di and so on);
  • check those without 3D representation;
  • click on the other existing image (usually 2D representation in the infobox);
  • go on such image file on Wikimedia Commons through the blue botton at the lower right corner;
  • access the commons category (categories are on the last line of the Commons file, at the bottom of the page);
  • check if a 3D image exists in such category;
  • if it does not, please write here that it is missing.

For uploading this is the link, please put both label and description (you can also do it in Italian) and add the suggested category.

Wikidata Infoboxes

[edit]

If we have time we show how to insert Wikidata Infoboxes with additional information to these categories. For this task you will edit on both commons and wikidata.

Examples

[edit]

Examples for the class:

Instructions

[edit]

Remember:

  • add {{Wikidata Infobox}} in the commons category source code
  • please fill the summary line (campo oggetto) if you can
  • the infobox appears and it's empty before adding the link on wikidata
  • search for the wikidata item through the article on wikipedia or through the search bar on wikidata.
  • please on the search bar don't put "category:X" but "X".
  • please look carefully at the item you want to link, read the first line after the language description table, where the key property "instance of" appears. Is it "chemical compound"? For example
d:Q54261715 and d:Q2567814, do you see the difference?
d:Q414101 and d:Q42389878, do you see the difference?
  • add the link to commons on the wikidata item in the section at the end of the page. Put "commons" on the right and "category:X" on the box of the left.

For this task, we assigned one user to each molecule.

wrong link on wikidata (as an IP) but this is my fault, d:Q4358522 is a confused item, mixing the generic molecule and 3-phenyl propionic acid,--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:59, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
dona as IP.--Alexmar983 (talk) 23:47, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
you put "wikidata infobox" with not capitol i, it's valid but it was corrected by a bot.--Alexmar983 (talk) 18:16, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
you linked to d:Q28027821 which is the item of "category:estranes". This is a link of all the categories including derivatives. You should have searched "estrane" instead of "category:estrane" on the search bar You link "category:X" but on the bar you search for X. However this is a confusion from the poor architecture of the system, so you did fair enough. --Alexmar983 (talk) 19:49, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata welcome message

[edit]

For the third lesson, AFTER all users have created a link commons-wikidata (previous exercise) please insert the welcome message on wikidata talk page.

For example User_talk:Sanna_Diego is the page for discussion here on English Wikipedia. Welcome messages contains key information for new users and some tutorials.

If you take a look I left you all a message on your talk page here, but you have not used yet. So you will now leave one on wikidata too.

You will all leave a message in a talk page of another user. The current link goes to the non existing page, as you can see the ":d:" stands for the link to wikidata, the link apperas blue and not red because it's a link to another platform. Only links to empty page on the same platform appears red. these pages are in any case empty and they still need to be created.

Click on "create" (at the left of the search bar in the right corner). The code to copy and paste in the blank page is this one:

{{Subst:welcome}}--~~~~

Paste it in the blank page, than "publish change".

Next time I am there we will discuss what the code means.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:29, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

not done, the talk page is still red.
