This is a proposal for granting bureaucrats the technical ability to remove sysop flags, or "desysop".[1] This is not a solution in search of a problem. It was created to find out where the community stands on this issue, without the de-adminship process.
Present situation and rationale
[edit]At the time of this proposal, desysoppings were carried out by members of the Steward user group. Questions were raised whether or not "outsourcing" all of our desysoppings to Meta, rather than keeping them in en.wikipedia, is such a good idea.
This proposal was somewhat structured around the consideration of the fact that the current bureaucrat cohort passed the grueling RfB procedure, and the fact that the trust the community has in them was there demonstrated and attested to. These users gained the level of trust needed to pass an RfB, and this brought to question why these same users could not be trusted with the function of removing the rights they have been elected to give.
Usage
[edit]Since there was at the time no process to desysop admins by the community, this ability would only be used in conjunction with desysoping requests made by Arb Com, self requests, mistakes made at the click of a button/CHU malfunctions or any other fast desysopings that Meta currently handles (so this would keep all normal desysopping that were done in house). So unless a process[2] gets approved by the community, for the community, to request a desysop, this technical feature won't be used for any other reason.
Only a straw poll
[edit]This proposal was only a straw poll to determine consensus (outside a community-based processs for desysoping, like the last proposal linked in the notes section), and from there, a bugzilla request can be made to implement this change.[3] Further policy changes may need to be discussed before this happens; it all depends on the feeling gained from the straw poll.
The poll is located at Wikipedia talk:Removing administrator rights/Proposal 2#Straw poll.
Notes
[edit]- ^ It is not the same proposal as Wikipedia:Removing administrator rights/Proposal, since the rationale is not the same.
- ^ If ever there is a time; see here for the most recent proposal
- ^ This is how it is done, so voting is the only means.
