Pictures of Smoker's Lungs
[edit]I know you all have seen the post-mortem images of blackened and charred lungs of heavy smokers. I was wondering if ALL heavy smokers' lungs looked like that by death, or if the lungs selected to photograph are the worst ones found. Since i've never seen partially-blackened lungs, just the pristine non-smokers lungs compared to the really damaged ones. UCF Cheerleader 01:38, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- First of all, the fact that someone is a non-smoker doesn't mean their lungs are pristine. There are loads of things that can affect lungs (heavy city traffic is probably the biggest cause at the moment). But given that almost everyone has an opinion on the subject and it is even governmment policy in many (western) countries to paint as negative a picture as possible of smoking, I don't think any source can be trusted on this. Most will only give the worst pictures of smokers' lungs, while others (probably sponsored by the tobacco industry) will do the opposite. It also helps that people are to gullible. I once saw on tv how someone was showing people images such as the ones that are shown on Canadian tobacco packs, including one of totally rotten teeth. Many people went like "Ooh, is smoking that bad? Better stop smoking then." But think about it. How many people do you know who smoke? How many of them have teeth like that? Right, none (most likely). Now that is something you can check, based on personal experience. If governments are willing to deceive us in a way that is so obviously wrong, then how far will they go when we can not check the truth of it? In other words, you will probably not be able to find a reliable, objective source on this. DirkvdM 05:39, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Wow, there's a simple objective answer to his question no need to muck it up with policy and black motives (by black I mean evil, not blackened as in black lungs or black as in african :s). It makes sense to me that if you regularly breathe thick black smoke it wouldn't take long at all for particulates to stick and look really nasty-- not to mention hurt you too. smoking is such a disgusting habit.. by the way dirk, the dangerous and lethal effects of smoking have been demonstrated time and time again. besides why would the government want to deceive us if they get so much tax revenue off a $100 carton of cigarettes? :) --frothT C 06:31, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- What are you on about? Sure, smoking is unhealthy. So are cars. And driving a car is consequently also a filthy habit (that also happens to affect innocent bystanders much more). But that is also neither here nor there. The question was about getting some reliable pictures of smoker's lungs and I merely pointed out why those would be impossible to get by. Your reaction is rather typical of the problem, though. You seem to suggest that since 'everyone knows' that smoking is unhealthy one should stop asking questions and simply accept any bullshit the government (or, by extension, the tobacco industry) throws at us. DirkvdM 06:42, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- My point was that common sense (yes everybody knows) says that inhaling think black smoke daily will cause some of that dry smoke to stick to your sticky wet lungs.. and turn them nice and black real quick. The actual health effects are another matter (though it seems rather obvious to me) --frothT C 20:23, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
boxing information
[edit]I have searched on the Internet and cannot find what I am looking for and it was suggested I try this. I have a ticket dated February 25, 1961 from the Las Vegas Convention Center for a boxing match between Gene Fullmer vs. Sugar Ray Robinson and have been told there was no fight on that date. The ticket was found among my in-laws things after they passed and it looks very real and I don't know why they would have a ticket that wasn't real. Can you tell me if it was scheduled and canceled after tickets were sold? Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Romney (<email removed>)
- Are you sure the date is the date of the event? Checking the internet for the fight, I came across the fight dated March 4, 1961 in Las Vegas, NV. Perhaps it was scheduled then moved back. —Mitaphane talk 03:54, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
Work Cited
[edit]How do i Work Cite Wikipedia?
- Wikipedia is the "work" you're going to "cite", so the question should have been How do I cite Wikipedia?. —Keenan Pepper 05:20, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Since it would be for the "works cited" page of their report, they may have just been making it a verb. Needlessly complicating things and using bad grammar, I'll give you that, but it made sense the way I thought of it. Dismas|(talk) 06:32, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- "work citing" is ambiguous in secondary education (at least in america). I remember that teachers would always say it as if it was a single word, and never did define whether it meant you were citing work that others had done, adding citations to your work, or just typing the words "works cited" at the top of the page for a good grade. My suspection is that he was just disambiguating for the poster's benefit --frothT C 06:42, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE REFERENCE DESK
[edit]If you haven't been paying attention to Wikipedia talk:Reference desk, you may not know that a few users are close to finishing a proposal (with a bot, now in testing and very close to completion) which, if approved by consensus, will be a major change for the Reference Desk.
Please read the preamble here, and I would appreciate if you signed your name after the preamble outlining how you feel about what we are thinking.
This notice has been temporarily announced on all of the current desks. freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ 06:59, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is not entirely clear to me what the proposal is. Is Wikipedia_talk:Reference_desk#New_ref_desk_division the only discussion on the subject and is User:Freshgavin/Sandbox/Reference_desk/Archives the only representation of the proposal? Or is there more? DirkvdM 07:54, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's a little tricky to find. There's a lot of talk about it but the link to it is obscured a bit... User:Freshgavin/Sandbox/Reference desk There is the new layout. That help? It did me. Dismas|(talk) 09:00, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, sorry that's it. I thought it would be clearer that the preamble was on the talk page of the desk. freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ 11:29, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

WP and alien contact
[edit]Sooner or later, someone will ask this question. IF there is alien contact, what will WP do ? I've been all over the 'net, heard about alien contact on the radio, TV, especially the recent History Channel broadcast about alien contact: UFOs: When UFOs Arrive, and seen this sort of thing. Some say the people will revolt, due to their own reasons, such as religious reasons and out of revenge for being made out to be a fool as persuant to certain govt. protocol, such as the Robertson Panel's recomendations. Martial Law 19:01, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ask Sting. He claims to be an alien, albeit a legal one. Then again, our article says that Sting didn't mean himself, but Quentin Crisp and, erm, it's too late to ask him anything. --Dweller 19:08, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- What will Wikipedia do!!?!?
- Right. Who cares how world governments respond. Does this mean that we'll need to start a Martian Wikipedia? How will factual claims based on precognition and clairvoyance affect the policy of verfiability? These are important questions!!! Martial Law has the foresight to ask the kinds of questions that would have avoided the Y2K problem, unlike some people Antonrojo 14:01, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

- Well, every Wikipedia article on life and similar subjects will become immediately obsolete. (Naturally, WP will fix most of them faster than other encyclopedias, though at the same time I expect there to be a large increase of vandalism.) But really, I don't see how it would change Wikipedia any more than any other big news story. zafiroblue05 | Talk 20:30, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- One other thing, I have met people all over the US who will shoot @ UFOs, aliens, Bigfoot, that sort of thing. I've seen reports on UFO and bigfoot websites and data sites concerning this as well. They're some of the people who told me flat out that the people will revolt should there be alien contact, some, for religious reasons, some, for vengeance for being made a fool of by the different govts., here in the US, the protocol contained in the Robertson Panel, related protocol. As to how alien contact may change WP, WP may become "Wikipedia, the Intragalactic Encyclopedia". Martial Law 22:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- WP already has two articles on it in which people have shot at strange things, one is the Kelly -Hopkinsville UFO Incident. Another is related to the Spook light phenomena in which a Australian national shot at a bizarre light. Martial Law 22:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Masking Water Works?
[edit]Having had to endure for the past few days a rather unpleasant odour coming from the water-works near where I get my bus to work I had a thought. Is it possible for the company to mix in something more pleasant smelling into the air/wherever appropriate and thus the odour will, whilst not ideal, at least smell more acceptable.
Or Perhaps if they just go through a whole lot of Febreeze?
ny156uk 19:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Personally I never buy water works I find that it's not worth the investment. And what's this with febreze appearing in every other question now? --frothT C 20:33, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't notice the common-theme with febreeze until after i'd posted, guess it must be 'in the air' (terrible I know). ny156uk 20:39, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Does nobody get my joke? Or do I have a monopoly on humor around here? --frothT C 05:39, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- I guess it wasn't technically a joke --frothT C 21:54, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
In the modern world, a lot of effort goes into dealing with this odour... you must be from the UK! :) --Zeizmic 21:03, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- "odour"? Ah so the cat is out of the bag! (I really don't know where I was going with this one) --frothT C 05:43, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Neither do I. I thought my sense of humour was weird. Yeah, humour. :) DirkvdM 08:20, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Mix in what? Some perfume? And have the whole block stink of perfume because it has to compete with the other smell (and thus have to be much stronger)? One person's perfume is another person's stench. I am usually that other person. I hate perfume. DirkvdM 08:18, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
After ejaculation pain
[edit]This has happened to me 3 times. After i ejaculate, i suddenly feel like i have an immense urge to pee. So i do so.. but even AFTER i have peed i STILL feel like i need to go soo bad. I keep going to the bathroom to go pee but nothing comes out because i already went.. so WHY does this happen. The first 2 times i thought it might have been because lotion got inside of my urethra, but now i don't know because this time didn't involve lotion. The only way i have learned to make this go away ASAP is to drink a ton of water so i can pee alot.. it's really weird.. any help???
- Wait a while after you ejaculate. Jamesino 23:27, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds like a prostate problem. Visit your doctor.--Light current 23:29, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Per Light current, get to a doctor ! Martial Law 23:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- It can be hard to pee after ejaculation (or even before if you have an erection). If you're attempting to pee with a 'semi' on, you're probably not emptying your bladder fully. I don't understand it fully, but there's some bodily mechanism that closes off the 'pee tube' and opens up the 'spunk tube' when you get a boner. It can take a few minutes for things to return to normal - try sitting around a bit and waiting for everything to go flacid... --Kurt Shaped Box 00:22, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thats true. There is some sort of valve system in place. However it still sound a bit odd to me! 8-?--Light current 00:28, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's probably worth getting checked out. Your doctor has probably seen much more embarassing problems in his time (self-inserted rectal/urethral foreign bodies for instance). --Kurt Shaped Box 00:54, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah self inserted objects could also be painful. Reminds me of a joke....(better not) 8-)--Light current 00:58, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- You have to be a girl. Getting us all worked up first and then leaving us in the cold. DirkvdM 08:33, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- I have had the same problem as the person asking the question. In fact, you don't need to pee, your urethra just stings a little. (Although it might be a good idea to pee once after ejaculation just to clear things out!) Wait a while and the stinging will go away. I asked a nurse about this once, and she said that this is common among men, or at least younger men, that it is stress-related, and nothing to worry about. But I am not qualified to give medical advice, and if you are seeking medical advice, you might want to ask a professional yourself.
- I also recognise the problem. I haven't had it for years, but it used to happen if an ejaculation didn't go well - too forced or distracted. Relax and if an ejaculation doesn't seem to happen accept that and stop. Next time will probably be better because the less you ejaculate the better are the times when you do and consequently you won't have the problem. And don't bother seeing a doctor if this solution works (sorry, I had to say that for some counterbalance, if only once. Three medical disclaimers so far - give it a rest). Of course I'm no doctor, but you'd be a blithering idiot if you assumed I were, and I don't wish to assume you are a blithering idiot. (just in case you thought there was an insult in there somwhere :) ). DirkvdM 08:33, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Im interested to know how an ejaculation does not go well. Do you mean it goes up the wall or something?--Light current 13:55, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I have had the same problem and have noticed that it happens more if I have drank something before I ejaculated. Then afterwards I feel as though I have to pee a ton. Then afterwards I don't even get to the bathroom door and I have to pee again. I have not gotten this checked out but I feel like I probably should now. It can be painful because you have to pee so badly. I do the same, I drink a lot and then it flushes out.
- Which part of "too forced or distracted" was unclear then? Black Carrot 16:16, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- How can those 2 words apply to this act? If youre forcing it, your doing it wrong. Also being ditracted by your mother calling you for tea means you should put it away and continue later.--Light current 17:28, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
