White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) swimming in St James's Park
The edit

This image is sharp and very clearly shows the shape of a white pelican swimming, was wondering if anyone thinks it is up to FP standards, as I'm unsure about the white balance.

  • I think the quality is good enough. Nitpickers might complain about the background noise or lack of 100% sharpness so I did some selective noise reduction and sharpening on the attached edit. Since many readers (and some FPC reviewers) don't have displays which show highlight detail well I also did a mild highlight reduction to avoid complaints about "blown" highlights. From an enc point of view you might get a little complaint from what seems to be a slightly odd pose with the beak coming out of the water, but I don't think it matters much, you should have a reasonable chance. The white balance seems fairly natural for a relatively low sun, tilting the highlights to pure white would make the shadows unnaturally blue imo.
