Manila is the capital of the Philippines. The city is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon, the country's largest island. Despite widespread poverty, it is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It is the second most populous city in the Philippines, with more than 1.5 million inhabitants, but is also the hub of the Metro Manila area — a metropolis consisting of 17 cities and municipalities, with over 10 million people.
