Inclusion criteria

[edit]

A product or service may be notable if it fits at least one of the following criteria:

  1. It is internationally recognised and has been made for sale in most countries.
  2. It has received widespread coverage in major newspapers or academic publications.
  3. It is a generic product or service offered by a number of suppliers.
  4. It is a historic product that has received wide coverage in books and demonstrated that the notability is not temporary.

Rationale

[edit]

Wikipedia has developed organically by volunteer editors and as a result systemic bias and articles that are less suitable for inclusion have been added. A set of notability guidelines for different subject areas have been developed by the community over the years to establish which articles should be added and retained in order to shape the contents of Wikipedia. Along with articles about musical groups, films, people and books editors frequently create articles about products that are not appropriate for Wikipedia.

One reason to exercise caution with allowing articles about products to be included in Wikipedia is to avoid SPAM by stealth.
