resubmission?

Hi- I have been working on an article about guitarist Janet Feder which has been rejected 3 times. I went in and made edits based on the notes left and now I can't figure out how to resubmit it...help? I really do think it's ready at this point... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.245.119.97 (talk) 00:25, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

The original "Submission declined" box at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Janet Feder says: "When you are ready to resubmit, click here." Click on that. It doesn't matter that there are two more recent boxes and one of them gave a different reason. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:59, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

You are welcome to improve this town's article. One good way to improve it would be to add references to reliable sources (books, news reports, and so on) so that readers can check it for themselves. But please do not copy and paste content from other websites into Wikipedia, as you have done here, since that violates copyright. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:20, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Please correct the name of Rajiv Ratna Gandhi to Rajiv Feroze Gandhi 120.62.5.216 (talk) 10:44, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

This is a page to help with using and finding your way around Wikipedia. We have a reference desk that helps with general knowledge questions if you have a question about Rajiv Gandhi's full name, or you could discuss the question at Talk:Rajiv Gandhi. But a quick search online appears to confirm what our article says - his name was Rajiv Ratna Gandhi, and Feroze Gandhi was his father. - Karenjc 17:36, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

adding photos

i am trying to figure out how to add a picture - i find the directions very confusing - can you help explain/simplify? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kehub (talkcontribs) 04:17, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

1 - A picture needs to be uploaded to Wikipedia, or to Wikimedia Commons, before it can be added to an article. You personally won't be able to upload files to Wikipedia until you have held your account for four days and have made ten edits - see WP:AUTOC, but you can upload a picture to Commons via Commons:Upload Wizard if it meets their copyright conditions. Or you can ask someone else to do it for you, at Wikipedia:Files for upload. Once the file has been successfully uploaded and licensed, it's easy to add it to an article. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial.
2 - We can't use any picture on Wikipedia unless the owner agrees to license it for reuse under Wikipedia's terms, or unless we can claim "fair use", which lets us use a few types of image (such as logos, book covers and pictures of people who have died) in very limited ways, or unless it is so old that its copyright protection has expired and it is in the public domain. Any picture that gets uploaded to Wikipedia or Commons without the correct licence, or where the copyright status is not clear, will be rejected and deleted again pretty quickly. So ...
3 - Did you take the picture yourself? (If so then you probably own the copyright and can license it for reuse, unless you took the picture as part of your employment or it's a photo of copyrighted material, such as a screenshot of a movie or a photo of a copyrighted image, in which case you probably don't and can't.)
4 - If you didn't take the picture, then where did you get it? If you just found it somewhere, and it's not copyright-expired and it's not going to be covered by fair use, then you probably can't upload it to a Wikimedia project.
Sorry, this still seems very complicated when I read it back, but it's the best I can do in terms of a simple summary. If you want to tell us a bit more about the image in question, we can give more specific guidance. Regards - Karenjc 07:52, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Image s and photographs for articles

Hello, Im not a regular Wikipedia editor but I joined 'Wiki Commons' as I am a Pakistani Christian and wished to add various images/photos of Christianity/Church related topics here. I uploaded one for St. Luke's Church, Abbottabad today but I am unable to add this to the article indicated; and dont know how to do this properly, Im sorry. Could some experienced editor please add the photo for me? Its an original one which i took and id be grateful, many blessings, thanks 39.54.215.0 (talk) 07:24, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Goodoo, Abbottabad town, Pakistan

Fixed. You had done it almost exactly right, but had just missed out an apostrophe from the filename. To link to an image file, the filename has to be exactly right, including the correct case and any punctuation. Thanks for your image and for helping to improve Wikipedia :) - Karenjc 08:12, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

change in spelling

Hello,

The surname patra is writtern as patro in many educational institutions, the pronounciation of patra in orissa is equal to the pronounciation of patro in the rest of the world. Since many of the people's surname spelling is changed to patro. I request you to also add "Patro" as one of the surnames in the wikipedia. Thanks for your understanding.

Regards, Surya

I have removed the reference to the surname Patra from the disambiguation page Patra, because there is no article on the subject yet. Our guidelines do not permit disambiguation page entries that don't link to an article. If one is written, it should be called Patra (surname) or similar. The page Patro is currently a redirect to Patro the Epicurean. There is no article about Patro as a surname, although we do have a couple of articles about people with that name. Patro (surname), if written, could be disambiguated with a hatnote on top of the philosopher's article. There's no immediate need to turn the redirect into a disambiguation page, unless articles are written about more meanings of the term. - Karenjc 11:30, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

uploading a translation of an existing article

Hi there, I recently contributed a new article in English and now have a Spanish translation of that article to contribute. I assume the Wikitext code will still be in English? Should I upload it to the English Wikipedia, or to somewhere else? Thank you. Farmer bev (talk) 21:35, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

This is the English Wikipedia at http://wiki.riteme.site. A Spanish article should be in the Spanish Wikipedia at http://es.wikipedia.org. See Help:Interlanguage links for how to show there is a version of an article in another Wikipedia language. Template names and parameter names (or whether there is a template at all) can vary between languages. Many other code details are the same. You will have to test which code works at the Spanish Wikipedia. There can also be different policies and guidelines for content. I don't know the Spanish Wikipedia but John Frawley (astrologer) has problems with English policies such as Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:41, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

How can I report an error for correction without an account?

In this article....http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Albert_Blithe#Misreports_of_an_early_death...the dates of service contradict the information in the article. Is there a way to report it for correction without having an account?

I guess 24.121.73.115 (talk) 21:42, 3 September 2012 (UTC) is supposed to be a name?

gung

24.121.73.115 (talk) 21:42, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

You could have reported it by clicking the "Talk" tab at top of the article and then the "New section" tab. But you could also have fixed it yourself by clicking the "Edit" tab on the article. Most articles can be edited without creating an account. I have however fixed it. The end of service year was incorrectly changed from 1967 to 1948 earlier today, probably because of the error mentioned in Albert Blithe#Misreports of an early death. A rerun of a TV program claiming he died in 1948 was shown today. If you create an account then ~~~~ will display your username. It displays your IP address if you are not logged in. When writing a botanical description, it is necessary to make numerous links to a glossary. At the article Canellaceae, some of the links worked, but as you can see, most did not. What can be done about this? 128.171.106.252 (talk) 06:33, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm assuming that you mean the numerous redlinks ([like this]) in the article. These do not work because the articles that they link to do not (yet) exist. Three options are available to fix the problem:
 • Unlink the terms (remove the [[]] square brackets)
 • Redirect the link to an existing article (e.g. change rays to ray)
 • Create new articles on the linked topics.
Regrettably I'm insufficiently knowledgeable about botany to make a call on which articles need to be created (for example, it seems that Cinnamdendron should have an article, but it could easily be a typo or a different name for something that already exists). I'd suggest raising it with WikiProject Plants so that an expert can take a look. Yunshui  06:57, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Whoops, sorry, I see what you mean now. The links need to be formatted like this: coriaceous; that is to say, you need a piped link to make them display properly. I think I've fixed them all now. Yunshui  07:04, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

I don't know why i started doing it wrong after doing it right 4 times. I would like to thank Yunshui for pointing out an obvious error by me.128.171.106.252 (talk) 06:14, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

editing copy

All I want to do is edit the copy and update the picture, but I can't find where to do that. Is there a place where this is explained? Thanks! Janet Taylor — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.28.102.21 (talk) 15:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Editing the text of most articles is straightforward: see HELP:Editing; but note that the text is required to meet certain standards, of verifiabililty and neutrality. Changing a picture is a little more difficult, particularly because it is so important to get the copyright status correct: see WP:Picture tutorial. --ColinFine (talk) 17:40, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Not unless the producer is notable enough to justify a separate encyclopedia article about him, which looks unlikely. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:28, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Bob Stewart (television producer) is an existing article. I have added the link with the code Bob Stewart which produces Bob Stewart. Do we need other users' permission when archiving old threads on a talk page?

I was just wondering if its performed by an automatic bot or by a moderator on Wikipedia? I've seen some talk pages that have 1-3+ years threads and I think that they need to be archived. Masterpeace3 (talk) 00:03, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

If you mean the user talk page of another user then don't archive it without their permission, but you can suggest archiving to them. If you don't mean user talk pages then see Help:Archiving a talk page. It's sometimes done manually, and sometimes by a bot after an editor has manually put an archive request on the page. Kanji in Wikipedia

Is there a way to make Japanese characters (kanji and kana) display correctly in Wikipedia? Perhaps my problem is that i do not know how to find information about templates in Wikipedia. 128.171.106.252 (talk) 06:21, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Depending on the age of your computer and operating system, you may have to install extra fonts to make Japanese text display correctly. Have a look at Help:Multilingual support (East Asian). -- John of Reading (talk) 07:21, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Advanced field searches

Is there a way to search lists/create dynamic lists of articles based on infobox template data?

Specifically I'm thinking of searching for all people with a name in common (who are therefore listed at that name's entry) based on, eg, whether they are alive or dead, year of birth/age, that kind of thing. So if I wanted I could search for, say, all the Williams who are alive and aged between 50 and 80 years old. Or all minerals with a hardness of a certain range. Or whatever, so long as it's in an infobox. Can I do that somehow that I've obviously failed to understand? Can I not do that because it would be a massive strain on Wikipedia's servers, or for some other technical reason? 92.13.227.252 (talk) 06:32, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

The people who know would be found at WP:VPT.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:36, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

how do you make a column space

I notice on plenty of wikipedia pages they have their info and direct links on the right side with there logo.

examples:

notice the right column side with logo and outgoing links directly to site. We have created page although we would liek to do that as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nvmedia (talkcontribs) 00:38, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Your example uses Template:Infobox website, which looks appropriate for your draft as well; put it at the top , above your current content, but below any Article for Creation items that get added as headers (those will later be removed). Dru of Id (talk) 00:58, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
When you say "we", to whom are you referring? Please note that shared accounts are not permitted and if you are an agency representing the subject of the article or the subject itself, you should not be creating the article. Please read WP:COI, WP:BESTCOI and WP:BFAQ. At the moment the draft is far too promotional in tone and it will need references to significant coverage in reliable sources to demonstrate notability per the guidelines. Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 17:48, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Cannot submit an article

Hello, I tried 3 times to submit an article about our company - Articles for creation/Lehmann Aviation, Ltd and each time there was smth wrong even though I made all the changes that were asked. First we didnt have enough reliable sources. We gave the reference to the official website of our company. Is it enough? Then we had troubles with the pictures that we posted. The pictures were taken by the owner of the company. He sent an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org (filled correctly the sample permission letter) confirming that the images can be posted. So basically we did all the changes but the article is still not accepted.. What the problem could be here? Thanks in advance.Ekarmanova (talk) 09:14, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

The underlying problem is that we aren't here for you to create an advertisement for your own company (or anybody else's, of course). A company's own website is notoriously not a reliable source, since it won't have the mandatory neutral point-of-view. More to the point, if your company is notable, then somebody else without your massive conflict of interest will write about it someday. Please see WP:ADVERT as well. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:59, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Adding photos

How do you add a photo to a page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.1.171.114 (talk) 21:03, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

 • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
 • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.--ukexpat (talk) 02:34, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion

Dear Sirs,

You argue that I that my article on 'Jacques Bittner' appears to be a clear copyright infringement, so you tagged it and deleted it. I disagree with your decision since I quoted the source of this information. I never meant to say that it was my creation. The information about him is so little and the only one available was the one I posted. Unfortunately, nobody else will know about his existence now. Why do you not create an article about him then if you had the time to write such an extense explanation about the infringement I committed?

Yours faithfully,

Moisés Ánton Bittner Pollux geminae (talk) 22:17, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

You are right you gave the source. Nobody is accusing you of trying to take credit for hte writing. Copyright infringement is the unauthorized use of works under copyright, infringing the copyright holder's "exclusive rights". In this case it may have been allowed to copy the work because the copyright has expired, but you didn't state a year of the source. Which edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians was it? Legitimate uses of the 1st and 2nd edition can be marked Grove1sted and Grove2nded. Whether he satisfies Wikipedia:Notability (music) is another matter which hasn't been evaluated. It doesn't sound good if there is so little information about him as you say. The detailed post at User talk:Pollux geminae was made in seconds by pressing a button to copy standard text from Template:Db-copyvio-notice. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:17, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the text is very much in copyright. The source is Grove Music Online (the contents are from the 2001 edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians). However, the subject is notable. I've re-written the article at Jacques Bittner and left some more detailed advice for Pollux geminae at his talk page. I screwed up an edit, help!

I was trying to be helpful and add death information to the article on architect Alexander Mackintosh. I misunderstood about how to add reference citation and ended up deleting a prior line, it now shows a red sentence about citation information. I'm so sorry! Can someone help me fix it or add the one line of information? He died August 2, 1945 in Long Branch, NJ (www.sah.org/index) It should actually go in the first section, but I know you can't edit there so I tried to add at the end of the personal information. I have owned Kennedy Farm for 40 years. With the help of Archie W. Franzen I have restored the house to 1859, the year that Brown occupied it. I have many pictures and text to explain what it is now. It is a National Historic Landmark and all restoration was done under the auspices of the Interior Department and the Maryland Historical Trust and mosly with their funds. Your picture was 1930 as were the drawings. My name is South Trimble Lynn and would be happy to help you update the site. If I knew how to send a current picture compared to a wood carving in Frank Leslie's several weeks after the Raid, I would. If you have photographs that you took yourself (and therefore own the copyright to them), they can be uploaded at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard so that they can subsequently be added to the article. You probably also have access to some sources and information that would be useful in expanding or correcting the article; it would be best for you to post these on Talk:Kennedy Farm for discussion. Dear Wikipedeia Permissions,

I thank you for any personalized reply regarding a permission request form to release copyright images which I sent to the image source locaters . I am fervently thankful to you. In any reply, you may state that you are trying to process my request, but do not see a clear statement that I have attempted to contact the copyright holder, and which license is applicable. At the outset, I fear I may commit two or three protocol errors with my Wikipedia Permissions (image upload) request.

In your reply email,if you state that you are trying to process my image upload request question , but to be honest, you mat need to see a clear , simple statement as to copyright ownership and under which license would suit the request, but that you are not clear as to which images the permissions request refers to which I interpret to be four or five specific images and one Treaty . pdf

Explanation:

At the time of this request and given what information I have been provided , I have submitted a Wikipedia copyright permission request form to the respective originating sources which are: [A] Intelektualiuju pastatu irengimas konsultacijos , [B] Vaizdo studija , and Penki TV klausimais, and that the Wikipedia Live Chat downloaded the sources to Google Images and stated that if I had not yet uploaded the images to Wikipedia, I could attach them to this email and request that you or Wikipedia Permissions upload them for me, and he stated that he can do this .Further, Live chat stated that if he did that , the image names should be descriptive.

Yours sincerely,

wrangel ferdinand

The Russian title of Wrangel's 1841 book is so grossly incorrectly transliterated that it makes absolutely no sense. The correct transliteration is: Puteshestvie po severnym beregam Sibiri i po Ledovitomu Moriu (St. Petersburg, 1841). It has recently been republished, with an introduction on Wrangel's life and activity, as Puteshestvie po Sibiri i Ledovitomu Moriu (Moscow: EKSMO, 2011). 69.203.14.108 (talk) 15:04, 7 September 2012 (UTC)Seymour Becker, Professor Emeritus of History, Rutgers University, New Brunswick NJ.

I assume you are referring to Ferdinand von Wrangel. If you have reliable sources stating this, you can edit the article yourself. An alternative would be to post on Talk:Ferdinand von Wrangel and explain what you have.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:03, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Sandy Posey

The sleeve notes of "The Very Best of Sandy Posey" show her birth name as Martha Sharp. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.133.98.175 (talk) 20:19, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

The key issue here is reliable sources. Our Sandy Posey article says that some sources do give her birth name as Martha Sharp(e) and the confusion arises because Posey's early recordings were all Sharp(e) songs. I'd suggest a "best of" compilation's sleeve notes is probably not a reliable source. A Google search for Martha Sharp(e) - it seems to be spelled either way - brings up evidence that she recorded an album of her music called Anywoman in 1973 that included her own version of her song Single Girl that Posey recorded. I won't link to it because it's YouTube, but there's a video of the song being played, illustrated by the album cover, with Sharp(e) herself pictured on it. On the balance of probabilities, therefore, the Martha Sharp(e) who wrote Posey's songs was indeed a seperate person from Posey herself, and the sleeve notes you have seen are likely to be based on inaccurate information. It would be good to have a better citation about this in the article, though, and perhaps even an article on Sharp(e) if notability can be confirmed and sources found. - Karenjc 19:14, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Copyrighting inherited photographs

I have tried everything I can think of to post a photograph of Dewey Barto inherited from my father George Mann who took the photograph, but the ImageRemovalBot removes it. I have checked on the Wikipedia Upload Wizard:

"This file was given to me by its owner.

The copyright owner of this file has given it to me for uploading on Wikipedia. I can provide evidence that they have agreed to release it under a free license, for free use by anybody and for any purpose."

But then there is no provision for inherited photographs. I wrote to someone on Wikipedia saying it was inherited, but obviously that didn't do any good. Can someone tell me step-by-step what I'm to do? Thank you. Brad Smith (talk) 17:32, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

The question is not who owns the physical photograph, but rather who owns the copyright to the photograph: who inherited the photographer's intellectual property in the picture he took? --Orange Mike | Talk 18:18, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, Orangemike. I inherited and own via my father's legal will the copyrights to my father's photographs. --Brad Smith (talk) 19:02, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

remove "improveBLP" banner on Ernst Horn?

Hi, A few days ago, I changed an article with an "improveBLP" banner adding several citations. Since I am an absolute Noob on WP, I did not dare to remove the banner. Perhaps someone can have a look and tell me, whether it now meets WP standard? --CarbonWoman (talk) 12:50, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi again, I hope, I did not say anything wrong? Please let me know, if this page here is not the right place to ask that question and give me some direction, where to pose it instead. I was totally confused by the hints for WikiProject (Musicians and Biography) pages on the talk page of Ernst Horn and really did not get to whom I should turn to.

We can't give you any legal advice about whether or not to accept an employment offer, but I would urge you to be very cautious. I base my suggestion on the "official documentation" you posted, which is not of the standard one would expect for a high-value job offer because it contains multiple errors, and has quite obviously not been written by someone with UK English as their first language. You should compare what it says about visas and documentation with the official UK Home Office guidelines for foreign workers and their employers on this site. To me as a UK resident the salary and benefits package appears very unlikely to be offered on an area sales manager post with an agriculture company, particularly one that does not appear on any Internet search. Most of all, I am suspicious that they are asking you for money. I repeat, we can give you no legal advice about this, but I will tell you that if I received this email, I would follow Demiurge's suggestion about what to do with it. Good luck. - Karenjc 20:22, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Uploading sources

My submission (YoAn Kim) requires additional attribution/sourcing. However, the bulk of my articles for sourcing are scanned docs. How can I upload these, or forward these to wikipedia for review? Cefaan (talk) 14:33, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

That's not the way that references work on Wikipedia. For a source to be reliable, it has to be published in some form or other, even if it is an obscure journal, out of print book etc. And if it has been published, there is no need to upload it - if you use one of the citation templates (Cite book, Cite news etc), you can provide enough details about the source so that anyone who wishes to verify it can find the source and do so. If the materials that you wish to use as references have not been published, then I am afraid they cannot be used as references on Wikipedia.--ukexpat (talk) 15:24, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

My father Colin Campbell deleted as hoax from cast list of A Family at War

Resolved
 – move conversation to user talk page.Moxy (talk) 18:07, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Search A Family at War - list of actors. My father Colin Campbell 1937 to date was in this programme but Kuru, whoever that is it would seem has deleted his name as its a "hoax". This is an error & must be confused with another actor of the same name. My father was indeed in this cast & was in the film The Leather Boys (to help with identifying him)

I want this error corrected

Many thanks Denise Campbell Dee1957 (talk) 17:47, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Can you be clearer about which article you are talking about? The article A Family at War has him in the cast list, but now as a redlink, because there isn't actually an article on him. At least on the English Wikipedia, the "Search" box uses a copy of the database that is updated only once a day - see Help:Searching#Delay in updating the search index. If the same is true of the Chinese Wikipedia, you may find it starts working if you wait 24 hours. If it still doesn't work, try asking at the Chinese Wikipedia help desk. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:50, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Is this progressive house duo worthy of a Wikipedia article?

Hello, and thank you for taking your time to read this. I was looking up for one of my favourite progressive house duos on Wikipedia, and found that they have been mentioned in numerous articles however they still don't have an article about them. After reading Wikipedia's Article Wizard, I am unsure of whether they meet the regulations of having an article.

The duo is called Project 46, often stylized as PROJ46T, and they consist of two men named Thomas Shaw and Ryan Henderson. They have produced official remixes of various popular songs, for example, Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson and What Is Love? by Haddaway. Their song Reasons (featuring Andrew Allen) has reached the top spot on Beatport, and various songs of theirs have been in the Top 25 on various electronic chart sites. However, I am not sure as to whether they need an article after reading the Article Wizard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 82.29.139.161 (talk) 18:45, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Question about references.

I was reading the following article on Hemp Milk on wikipedia. Hemp milk (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

My question is, since when does a "reference" to an opinion count as a citation? If I had a blog that said Michael Vick was an undercover cop trying to bust the dog fighting ring, and reference that to a wiki article about Michael Vick, does that make it "true"?

Also, when it comes to science, shouldn't there be peer reviewed data to justify a citation rather than the alleged credentials of a person? If Bill Gates says Kenya has the lowest rate of AIDS in the world, would you automatically append the article on Kenya based on an "experts" claim?

I apologize for my long and winding way of asking this question, but how do I say that in the article when I ask for more references and citations to data vs opinion. I believe the authors of that article should provide more credible references than what appears to be the blog of a fringe "doctor" on the fringe of his profession with very little scientific data even on the website cited.

If my question isn't clear, I apologize. Please ask me to clarify and I shall try again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.197.20.200 (talk) 03:35, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia, as a collaborative project, is only as good as the content people put into it, and improvement is an ongoing process. The "authors of that article" are the various users who have contributed to Hemp milk so far; none of them has any particular rights or ownership over it, or any obligation to contribute to it further. It's true that Andrew Weil's opinions are seen in some quarters as controversial, (although I'm not sure that I would dismiss someone with Harvard degrees in medicine and biology as a quote "doctor" unquote - can you point us at a reference to demonstrate that his credentials are false?). The citation is technically accurate as far as it goes, because it doesn't say "there are no THCs in hemp milk", it says "Andrew Weil says there are no THCs in hemp milk", and the citation confirms that yes, he does say it. I agree with you that the best way to improve the article would be to find a reference to the results of a scientific analysis of hemp milk, remove the reference to Andrew Weil's opinion, and cite the analysis instead. You, like any other user, are most welcome to do this and your contribution would be appreciated. For more information on the standards Wikipedia aspires to, take a look at Wikipedia:Reliable sources. - Karenjc 08:58, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Firstly, thank you for replying. I'm still getting my head wrapped around how to contribute on wikipedia. Just asking questions here makes my head spin. For instance, I couldn't figure out how to find this page again. Then, I couldn't figure out how to "reply" to your information. So, I hope I'm doing it right.

Getting back to the matter at hand, and perhaps I am wrong in assuming this, but opinions have no place in science. So, a scientist, no matter how qualified, is no reference in a scientific claim, only the scientific study is. If you make a scientific claim, you must provide scientific evidence, i.e. peer reviewed studies , double-blind studies etc. If no such studies exist, then should it not be stated that "Weil makes health claim A, claim B about Hemp Milk, but none have been substantiated by any scientific studies/medical tests". The reference to Weil's website/blog only suffices to show that Weil prescribes that view while making no attempt at illuminating where such an assumption arises from. There is no citation on Weil's own site, or on the wiki itself that indicates such. A real encyclopedia would disallow the information as it is (following my original examples) self-attesting. It is as if I make a claim and I provide my credentials as a reference. I hope that makes sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.197.20.200 (talk) 04:05, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you're doing the editing part right :) What you still seem to be struggling with is the concept that someone in authority, somewhere, won't come along and summarily "disallow" this statement on the grounds that it's not a proper scientific citation. This is not how Wikipedia works: there is no central editorial supervision. Instead, we have consensus. Unencyclopaedic content can be removed on sight. Encyclopaedic content must comply with policy or it may be removed by any other user. Encyclopaedic content that complies with policy (i.e. is neutral, verifiable and supported by a reliable source will probably survive a challenge. Take a look at WP:BRD. The "bold, revert, discuss" cycle drives improvement via consensus on Wikipedia. We write; we revert other people's contributions; we discuss and even argue; we justify our actions with reference to rules and policy, and turn to them for guidance; we develop/change the rules by consensus if they prove inadequate. What I'm saying to you is that I don't disagree in any way with your dislike for the phrase in question, or your reasons for feeling that it shouldn't be in the article, and if you wish to be WP:BOLD and remove it I won't be lining up to revert you. If you can replace it with a more accurate and better referenced statement about the composition of hemp milk, or even improve the article in other ways too, so much the better. If someone challenges your removal, you then go to Talk:Hemp milk, discuss it with them, and reach consensus on what the wording should be. If you can't reach consensus, you follow the process at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. But what doesn't work (often) on Wikipedia is complaining that something should be changed. If it's an immediate danger: for example, libellous vandalism on an article about a living person, or a child revealing personal contact details, someone will get right onto it. But if it's a complaint about some poor-quality content, the response is most likely to be "feel free to make it better". Karenjc 08:49, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
By the way, I do appreciate the steep learning curve Wikipedia presentes to the new user, and I've left a welcome message on your talk page that contains a few handy links that may help you find your way around. - Karenjc 08:54, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

List of cities with most skyscrapers

I don't have a degree in computer engineering so I've ended up here. I just want to say that Adelaide Australia needs to be added to the list of cities with >100m skyscapers. See your article on Adelaide (Westpac House at 132m). Romanpasa (talk) 00:21, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

You haven't made clear which list you are talking about, but I guess it is List of cities with most skyscrapers#List of cities with most buildings at least >100m. If so, that is not a list of cities which have buildings taller than 100m (I guess there are hundreds of those), but the cities that rank highest in the combined total of their buildings above 100m. That does seem to me to be an odd classification, as it is hard to calculate and keep up to date; but as it stands, that is what the list is. --ColinFine (talk) 10:40, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
It's hard to tell, but it looks as though Adelaide (with three >100m buildings totalling either 350 or 339m in height, depending on how you measure them) would slot in just below Haifa, which has three such buildings totalling 379m. I can't tell whether it should be above or below Valencia, Venezuela, or indeed any proof that the latter should be there at all, as there are no supporting references for its total of three >100m buildings and I can find references for only one externally, the one listed in the List of tallest buildings in South America, and that one isn't finished yet. The list's odd, as you say, and more than a bit scrappy. - Karenjc 11:10, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

USS Missouri Article - Chapter Missing...?

Hi, I do not feel that I can effectively create any material for Wikipedia. That said, I find that the article on the USS Missouri to be excellent. The Missouri article does have a small but noteworthy chapter missing though. This battleship was activated and utilized during the Vietnam war and there is no mention of that fact. Additionally, strictly a personal curiosity question, in various articles about the USS Missouri, its been said that its big guns could fire a shell "20 miles", "25 miles" and "30 miles". I'd really like to know what the truth is on the Missouri's big gun capability and have that included in the article. I have no US Navy connections and am unaware of how to substantiate my observation. John D MacDonald

Several years ago I edited some material on the site. I am considered to be an expert in John D. MacDonald, and have had a web site devoted to him since 1996. I am going to putting up a statement from his son regarding "imitators" soon, and want to review how to do it. I simply have forgotten and do not have any passwords, etc. I may have used in the past.

A little help would be appreciated.

Also, we ( his son and I ) intend to put a copyright symbol at the end of his statement. Should that protect his statement??

thanks

Sorry, I don't understand what you want to do. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia that anyone can edit, and this is a page for questions from new users who need help. Are you trying to upload a photo? If so, see Wikipedia:Uploading images - you will need to create an account and be autoconfirmed to do this. Or go to WIkipedia:Images for upload. If this is not what you want, could you explain a little more about how we can help you? - Karenjc 16:10, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Deleting the "School" Reference in article name

Hello, I am trying to correct issues in the article "Kinney Karate (School). Since the subject was labelled 'school' in error, I would like to have that classification taken off. It is actually a "style" that would be listed in the "Karate" section. It is not an advertisement. It should be 'Kinney Karate' by itself as a title of the Article, or it should have the term 'Style' added to make this a correct label. Please help and tell me how to make this edit. I am correcting this page as per "articles for deletion" discussion. I have worked on citations, and removing the issues that were brought up for discussion. Thank you User:sokemike Sokemike 21:10, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

You have moved it between Kinney Karate, Kinney Karate (System) and Kinney Karate (School). Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kinney Karate (School) has been open under that name for seven days. Let's give the moves a pause until the deletion discussion closes. It should be soon and it's problematic to move an article during such a discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your answer, the moving process was due to confusion over the process. Sorry, I couldn't undo the initial mistake of labeling. User:sokemike (talk) 22:34, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kinney Karate (School) was relisted instead of closed so it may now be another week. But as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#Wikietiquette says: "While there is no prohibition against moving an article while an AfD discussion is in progress, editors considering doing so should realize such a move can confuse the discussion greatly, can preempt a closing decision, and can make the discussion difficult to track." There is no serious problem with the name so I think it should be kept during the relisting. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:39, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Article "Wolf Attacks on Humans"

Forgive me that I may not have directed this request to the appropriate party, however I find this article to be ignorant, and wrongly documented (see dead links for references, one of which is an undated, unpublished unauthored investigative report, others seem to have been 'created'), non-scientific, fear mongering, myth oriented, damaging and damning article about wolves. The bias is unreasonable and is not 'Wikipedia.' There is no fact presented. Nothing about this article is objective. I am well researched on wolves. Everything about this article intentionally damages a previously protected species, Canis Lupus. What is presented as verifiable fact is nothing more than falsely supported lies. This article is a heap of non-sense and supports negative propaganda and lies. If it was supported and even mildly scientific, it might be less offensive. This needlessly evokes fear and perpetuates the wrongful negative stigma of a timid and shy extirpated animal, the intelligent, purposeful, supremely beautiful wolf. I therefore request it be deleted. Please click on the references. They are either not topical, fabricated, irrelevant, dead links, undocumented all of which serve to degredate the reputation of an animal in holocaust both by public opinion and governmental policy pressure. For Pete's sake.... This is a shame in the highest. There are so few left... how many wolves do you think hunter will opportunistically eliminate based on a Wiki article that supports why they should... this supports and caused a warped perception that we need to slaughter a struggling species.. its inhumane. Not acceptable. Thank you, in advance for your consideration. Thank you, in all fairness. Toni Goodrick — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.189.205.115 (talk) 22:04, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmm. On the face of it, the article appears to be well-sourced; but I see a similar concern was aired on the talk page last year.
The answer really is that there is no 'appropriate party': Wikipedia is created by everybody who wants to get involved in it, such as you and me. If you can see a way to improve Wikipedia, you are invited to be bold and improve it: you could start by challenging or removing the references which your say are not reliable.
However, since you are evidently passionate about the subject, it is important to keep in mind that Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view. If there is disagreement about subject (and there presumably is here, since you so strongly object to what is in the article) then the article should say so, and present a referenced account of both sides of the controversy.
In fact, before making any edit which is likely to be controversial, it is best to open a discussion on the article's talk page: if nobody replies within a reasonable time, you can go ahead and make the changes, but if there is disagreement, you are required to do your best to achieve consensus. --ColinFine (talk) 10:56, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

editing protocol

I have a problem interpreting policy. Guidelines say "no original research" and "should be independently verifiable". I offered to improve a non-controversial page [Yongphulla Airport] because yesterday I inspected the airport. I guess that is "original research". The page at present is good, as far as it goes. I would only add a little up-to-date information from personal observation. Do want it? Nai segh (talk) 10:38, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

You are right; your personal observations are original research, and thus unacceptable as a source for Wikipedia. You need something which has been published as a reliable source. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:18, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
The point is that readers of Wikipedia have no way of checking whether you are who you say you are, or whether what you say you saw is accurate (this is not to impugn you: the same is true of me, or anybody else on the net). So we require that readers can in principle check that the information has been published by a reliable source. --ColinFine (talk) 23:20, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mandorla10. I'm assuming the article is Anton Mosimann and the picture you uploaded is File:Chef Anton Mosimann OBE DL.jpg. There is a problem with that file at the moment. That image has been previously published elsewhere, e.g. Mosimann's Twitter page, (full image here). It therefore cannot be uploaded to Commons without the express permission of the copyright holder. You stated that the picture was entirely your own work. Are you the photographer? If so, you are going to have to follow the procedure at commons:Commons:OTRS. If you are not the copyright holder, that page also explains what to do. I could switch the photo in the article for you, but the new one is at great risk of being deleted as a copyright violation. I think you should clarify its status first. Voceditenore (talk) 16:45, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Well, phrases like "Elixir’s Tango platform is 100 percent web-based", and "allows the flexibility to deploy in the cloud" say to me "I am trying to catch your attention and impress you" not "I am dispassionately describing something". But it's not just individual phrases: the whole lede screams "Look at how wonderful I am! I am an advertisement". Moving article from sandbox

Hi, I am having difficulty moving articles out of My sandbox. I move them but it remains as a redirect from my sandbox, so I can't start on anything new.

Is there a help page with step by step instructions for creating, then moving an article out of My sandbox, freeing it up? Thanks, it1224 (talk) 13:55, 20 September 2012 (UTC) i can be notified on my talk page.

Legoland Miniland Las Vegas exists as an article in its own right. User:It1224/sandbox is a redirect to that article. If you click in the "User:It1224/sandbox" link at the top of the article having gone through the redirect, or if you go to [this link] it will get you to the redirect page and you can use the edit link to blank the sandbox, or to replace the redirect by new sandbox content. Until recently when you moved an article there was an option not to leave a redirect, but I believe that this option may recently have been removed from the move dialogue. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:18, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

newly created article review

I have tried to find the answer to this question without success. Can you please tell me WHEN the policy change occurred which requires that newly created articles pass a review before they are published? I have created several articles in the past and that was not the policy then....so I would like to know when the change occurred. Thank you!

Please do reply on my talk page. Thank you again! Kmzundel (talk) 15:49, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

There is no such requirement. The review process is part of the "Article for Creation" process. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:02, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
When you created earlier articles, such as Rising Son Records, you did so directly, rather than through the Article creation process. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:20, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Wow. Even though I've had some experience, considering that I didn't know/realize there was a difference, I feel very much like a novice. Is there any advantage(s) of one over the other? Kmzundel (talk) 17:13, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
The review process runs your new article through a gantlet, meaning that if it survives the ordeal it's unlikely you will encounter any speedy deletion. On the other hand, it's somewhat harsh at times, and there's a very lengthy backlog indeed. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:24, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you again. I'm still a bit confused. I mean, when I searched for an article and it didn't exist (i.e. Joel Rafael), I created one...and it did not go through a review process. So how (or maybe where?) would an article be created that must be reviewed? Kmzundel (talk) 18:07, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
At Wikipedia:Articles for creation. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:23, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you again. Kmzundel (talk) 19:37, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Since there's such a huge backlog of articles waiting to be reviewed, would it be OK to forego the review process and create an article(as in Joel Rafael above) by copying/paste an article waiting to be reviewed?Kmzundel (talk) 19:51, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
You may always create an article directly: you just run a greater risk of having it deleted. If you're going to do that, I advise you to move it to main-space, rather than copy and paste. But what's your hurry? Your article is there on the site, waiting for people to review it. What difference does it make if it gets reviewed and moved to mainspace tomorrow, next week, or next month? --ColinFine (talk) 19:54, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Tomorrow, next week, or next month would be OK.....but when I checked the backlog, it looks like there have been articles waiting to be approved/reviewed for several years. I don't think I know how to move an article to main-space....a new skill to investigate, I guess.  :-) Kmzundel (talk) 23:31, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

In the beginning I always thought that you had to get your article reviewed first before it can be shown in the website.Masterpeace3 (talk) 22:09, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Just the opposite for me. I always thought you just created an article and it appeared on main-space. I'm helping a friend who obviously created an article via the review process.....so I thought the rules had changed. Kmzundel (talk) 23:31, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Articles can be created several ways, including drafting in a personal sandbox, using the AFC process and diving straight into article space. There are no hard and fast rules, but I think we should be encouraging inexperienced users to create in a sandbox or at AFC.--ukexpat (talk) 14:25, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

how to request a wikipedia article on shangai dragon pc game?

i have not find wikipedia article on shangai dragon pc game, so i want to request a wikipedia article on that game. so how to request a wikipedia article? Ram nareshji (talk) 09:17, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

The title is Shanghai Dragon, but it hasn't got an article, though it's mentioned in passing in List of ninja video games.
If the game meets the requirements for notability, then it may have an article: I suggest you request one at WP:Requested articles, or else talk to the folks at the video games WikiProject. But it's worth checking first whether it has been written about, because if it hasn't, then it shouldn't have an article. --ColinFine (talk) 11:47, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

It's a low-budget FPS that hasn't got any English language reviews whatsoever.[6] --Niemti (talk) 12:05, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

sorry, i cant understand the sentence "talk to folks at the video games WikiProject", means what?Ram nareshji (talk) 12:44, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

If you leave a message at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Video games, someone in the project with knowledge of the subject may be able to help. However, the likelihood is that as there does not seem to be significant coverage at multiple reliable sources which are independent of the subject, it may not meet the criteria for inclusion on Wikipedia. Editing An Article TITLE

I am trying to edit the title of my article. It somehow begins with USER: and then the title. When I try to follow instructions given on other sources, it says to click on MOVE. I can't locate a MOVE button. Is there an easy way to take the USER: out of my title? I notice that a lot of people seem to have this happening to them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr. Joe Teal (talkcontribs) 13:20, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

The "Move" link may be hidden under a down arrow button, possibly between various tabs and the search box at the top of the page. But if the "article" you are referring to is User:Dr. Joe Teal, there are many reasons why it shouldn't be moved to mainspace, and why it would be deleted if it were. It has no references to independent reliable sources to give the content verifiability. You need to read a number of things, including WP:BIO, WP:BLP, and (as this appears to be an article about you) particularly Wikipedia:Autobiography and WP:COI. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:44, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
I should also add that there is no indication that you meet the notability criteria which would justify inclusion in the encyclopedia. I cannot find coverage about you at any reliable sources which are independent of yourself. The page is also not written in a neutral way. All in all, I do not see evidence that you meet the criteria for having an article about yourself. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:18, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Your account is not autoconfirmed yet so you don't have a move tab and cannot move pages. For new users it is recommended to use Wikipedia:Articles for creation to create an article suggestion for review. As David says, the current content of User:Dr. Joe Teal is far from suitable. It's puzzling since I copied the format and content of the footnotes exactly from another Wiki entry who is a business partner with the one I'm working on. But after you fix it, plz show me how to do it, as I would like to learn the craft of "Wikipedianing." ;) Thank you so much! Lopezjaylo98 (talk) 20:49, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Portals are very tricky! I've taken Portal:Miley Cyrus a few steps further forwards. Check the history of the pages on this list to see what I did to the portal and some of the sub-pages. The next steps, I think, are to create the first few "selected article" and "selected picture" subpages (but remember that "fair use" pictures are not allowed on portal pages). For the other boxes, either remove them or look at, say, Portal:Cornwall to see what sort of content is usual. Feel free to ask for more help. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:13, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Novice needs help....

Hi, I uploaded a picture which seems like it went through ok. I'm trying to create that box to the right of most artists' page with their bio info. Even though I took the info to embed the Allpartsmove (talk) 15:08, 27 September 2012 (UTC)picture on a wiki page... it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it's a simple thing I'm missing but could someone please help me out here... most appreciative for your assistance with this. 15:08, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

You're using the right syntax if the image were standing alone, but you are trying to use it inside the 'infobox musical artist' template. If you go to Template:infobox musical artist, you will see that it says: "Set to only the image name, e.g. Example.png, not Image:Example.png or ."
This is a common problem, because it's not obvious until you go and look, and I believe that not all templates work this way.
Incidentally, the image is so huge that it may have problems displaying even a thumbnail. And if you are indeed the copyright holder, then you problably have a conflict of interest, and should read WP:COI before you create the article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:37, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

JUST posted blog about my new book. seems it may be deleted, although I supplied ISBN numbers, and Publishers details. Why ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RADICAL ROONEY (talkcontribs) 00:56, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

A Year on the Streets was deleted per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G11. The large majority of published books don't satisfy our requirements. See Wikipedia:Notability (books), and see also Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:32, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Add about Khalid Al Maeena's contribution to the cricket in the kingdom of saudi arabia

Khalid Al Maeena recently awarded as the,"SOUL OF CRICKET IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA", by Jeddah Cricket Association on Sunday 23rd September 2012 at Jeddah Cricket Association's complex at Usfan on the occasion of the Saudi National Day Celebrations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.53.97.42 (talk) 22:00, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

We do not seem to have an article about him. If he is notable by Wikipedia's standards (i.e. several independent reliable sources have written about him) then there could be an article about him, if somebody wanted to write one. Winning an award is not necessarily a guarantee of notability in this sense, though it will help. If you want to pursue this, I suggest you request and article. --ColinFine (talk) 09:06, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

D-Salliese Sorting Algorithm

i have discovered new and best sorting algorithm how can i post in Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deme kefe (talkcontribs) 06:40, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

When you say you "discovered" it, do you mean you found it published in a reliable source, or do you mean you found it by original research? If the latter, I am sorry to say that you have to get it published first in a relable source, for Wikipedia does not publish original research. —teb728 t c 08:43, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Using a picture I saw on Wikipedia that I could not find in Wikimedia Commons.

Hi,

I want to use this picture that I found on Wikipedia. I don't know how to upload it with the appropriate citations though and I couldn't find it on Wikimedia Commons. Is there a simple way to go about using this picture? It should be okay to use because it's already on Wikipedia right?

This is the link to the picture that I'm talking about. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:Tail_flick.jpg

Caption
If you are asking about using the picture on English Wikipedia, it makes almost no difference whether it is on Wikipedia or Commons. gives the result at right. If you click on the picture, the image description page says, "This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License." That statement rather than the fact that it is on Wikipedia is the reason it is OK to use. I hope this tell what you wanted to know. —teb728 t c 04:24, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Deleted the picture of Harvey Milk in the "Mayor" page

Deleted the picture of Harvey Milk in the "Mayor" page since Harvey Milk was never elected Mayor of San Francisco. The original information on the page is not correct, and keeping Harvey Milk's picture on the "Mayor" page doesn't help explain the word. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.31.225.2 (talk)

Thanks. The picture was added to the page two days ago but didn't belong there. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:28, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
My huge mistake. Thanks for the correction Jeanpetr (talk) 02:32, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Changing pictures

How Do you change a wikapedia picture example: Rita Ora — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shaun3559 (talkcontribs) 08:18, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:29, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually see Wikipedia:Uploading images first. For there are two other things that you need to do before you can use the tutorial:
 1. Get permission of the photographer for use of the photo by anyone for anything. (Permission for use only on Wikipedia is not enough.) For this reason it is easiest to use a photo you have taken yourself.
 2. Upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons (if it has not already been uploaded). It is not possible to use a photo unless it has been uploaded to Wikipedia or Commons.
