Wikipedia:NYRM2018

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NYRM2018 was a foreshadowed RM to move the New York City article to the base name New York. It did not proceed, see the talk page.

Moratorium

[edit]

There is an informal and non-binding but popular moratorium on requested moves affecting the New York base name, the New York State and New York City articles, and the New York disambiguation page.

This will expire on 19 July 2018, that being a year after the closure of NYRM2017, see this page's talk page.

NYRM2019

[edit]

"NYRM2019" is a name for a hypothetical RM (perhaps in 2019) proposing to move the New York State article back to the base name New York.

If NYRM2018 is rejected, then we have established that a DAB at the base name New York is preferred to having either NYS or NYC as the destination of New York, and so which of the two is preferred is academic.

However, if NYRM2018 succeeds, then in theory there might be a case for having NYRM2019. If a Condorcet Paradox exists, as has been suggested, then NYRM2019 will also succeed, and we will have moved the destination of New York in a circle. And we'd then need to deal with this.

But before getting too worried about that, please see Wikipedia talk:NYRM2018#Condorcet paradox test, where it is argued that NYRM2019 cannot possibly succeed, and would be a waste of time.

So NYRM2019 is hypothetical, and hopefully will remain so. But it's still good to have a name for it, as it's bound to come up in discussion of NYRM2018.
