Introductions, making contact
I created a user profile where I disclosed my conflict of interest. I also set up dashboard for transparent tracking of edits. A bit late in the process but I introduced myself to the WikiProject Medicine community and made contacts with other WiRs including Cochrane's.
NIHR Wikipedia article
NIHR had its own article on Wikipedia but much of the information was outdated. I have rewritten most of the text, updated and expanded it. Instead of editing directly I have submitted the changes as edit suggestions along with my COI.
Mentions of NIHR on Wikipedia
NIHR was mentioned in many relevant Wikipedia articles (for example on researchers' bio articles) but in many cases there was no link to the actual NIHR article. I have included a link on all these mentions and included the full name where only the acronym was used.
NIHR categories
I have compiled a list of senior NIHR researchers and using OpenRefine I organised their Wikipedia articles in the categories NIHR Research Professors and NIHR Senior Investigators. Some of the articles did not mention the researcher’s relationship to NIHR, I expanded these. I also created a category on Wikipedia which collects all NIHR related articles.
Text and presentation on Wikipedia's health content
I created an introductory text for the NIHR on how Wikipedia and its health content which I used in multiple presentations to NIHR staff. During the writing process, I have significantly expanded the article that collects studies on Wikipedia's health content. I also wrote a blog post on the topic for the NIHR and gave an interview to The Scotsman about my role (both yet to be published).
Wikimedia Commons
I created a draft explaining how the NIHR could use and contribute to Commons. I proposed these ideas which include using Commons images on the NIHR Evidence website and uploading research infographics and photos of researchers.
Edit-a-thon
I started preparing an edit-a-thon which will focus on medical researchers coming from underrepresented backgrounds.
Integrating Wikipedia editing into the NIHR
After we set up and met with the steering group of the project, I have started exploring and drafting how the NIHR could use Wikipedia editing. This is an ongoing process that takes the majority of my time. The goal is to present a clear narrative on why researchers should edit Wikipedia and propose specific ways how it could be integrated to the research and dissemination process.
